Today Shillong is a blend of the divine and the mundane- remnant of the Raj, virgin nature , astounding ethnic colors, exotic orchids, cascading waterfalls, mysterious and sacred forest groves, unpredictable weather, an 18 – hole championship golf course, probably the best Chinese / Tibetan cuisine food east of Kolkata and ofcourse growing unplanned urbanization.

Shillong Bazaar

Also known as the rock capital of Meghalaya, Shillong is a sure- fire place round the year. Though the best time to be in Shillong is during Christmas, March – April is the tourist season.

Society

Society In Shillong

Geographically, culturally all the places in India differ from each other but there is another difference that can be observed in Shillong (Meghalaya). All the states in India have a patrilineal type of society whereas Shillong has the matrilineal society. As compared to other regions here in Shillong, women lead the society and have more status than the men.

The women have the freedom to work for themselves, though they do not have a say in the community matters. The women have a great respect in the society. The society in Shillong does not allow custom where bride has to pay dowry while getting married.
Here women are considered very respectful as they give birth to the new generation. They have to execute all their household duties. Men make the decisions for the family but they have to consult with the women in the household.

Laws of Inheritance in Meghalaya Society

 • Some special rules regarding the inheritance of the property are observed in Shillong
 • The maternal property is inherited by the youngest daughter, whereas rest of her sisters would be provided with some part of the property from it during their parents lifetime
 • Also there are some practices observed by the tribal of the region. If the head of the tribe dies or retires then the son of his eldest sister will be his heir. It has been seen that women are held very high position in family as compared to social activites where men takes over everything.

The Khasis are the predominant tribe in the Shillong area. Believed to have originated in Southeast Asia, their language belongs to the Mon – Khmer group. It is not known when they migrated to this region. Today, the majority of Khasis are Christians, their ancestors converted by British missionaries in the 19th century. Meghalaya is dotted with timeless stone monoliths erected as memorials for tribal chieftains. Local Khasi “monarchies” are still nominally ruled by Syiem (traditional ruler).
Nevertheless, they retain many of their tribal customs. Chief among these is their matrilineal social structure, which dictates that landed property can only be inherited by females, with the youngest daughter given a special position as custodian of the family house and the clan’s traditional rituals
The Khasi women wear a jainnkyrsha pinafore in gingham – checked cotton, fastened on one shoulder and overlaid with a tartan shawl. Most Khasis consider Kwai (betel) chewing a semi religious habit. Khasi markets work on an eight day rotation and some village fairs feature Yaturmasi (bull versus bull fights).

According to climatology the climate of a place depends upon its altitude, higher the altitude is, the more cooler and soothing is the climate. May be this is a reason that the Shillong (Khasi and Jaintia hills) have cold weather conditions. The monsoons season begins in June and it rains almost till the end of the month of August. Shillong has cool climate through the year. During the summer the maximum temperature of 24°C and a minimum temperature of 15°C have been observed. Winters months from November to February are freezing and have a minimum temperature around 0°C. The dense cover of fog engulfs the entire region. In fact, this is the best time when revelers could get spectacular views of mountains bind in the palatial tapestry of beauty and serendipity. A visit during the monsoon season would turn as a great obstruction for the travelers. The landslides and heavy flow of debris is quiet common. The monsoon showers are accompanied by heavy winds and rainfalls which further leads to hail storms and floods in some parts of Shillong.

2 INDERJYOTI i want to knw the good hotels in shillong & what are the prime attractions of Shillong. thank you in advance.
Hi Inderjyoti,

There are several places in Shillong worth visiting.

Shillong Peak:- Shillong peak is located at a distance of 10 kms from the center of the city at the scenic southern limits of Shillong. A magnificent view of the Himalayas can be seen from the peaks when the skies are clear. A panoramic view of the scenic landscape and the city can be seen from the peak. In the evening the city lights from the top appear like a star-studded abyss.

Sweet Falls:- The sweet falls are sited at a distance of about eight kms from Shillong. The fall is known for its simple though beautiful elegance. The water falling from the fall resembles a straight pencil of water flowing out from a huge water pipe.

Spread Eagle Fall:- The eagle falls are located within the boundary of Shillong Cantonment at the out skirts of the city. The dazzling waterfall give an impression of an eagle with wings spread open and hence it is known as the Spread Eagle Falls.

Botanical Garden:- The Botanical Garden is located downstream of the main wards lake. There at the garden one can also find a wide collection of beautiful, colorful and rare species of birds particularly Tragopan, Pheasant and Wildfowl.

Lady Hydari Park:- A short distance from the Wards Lake is lady Hydari Park, with a pretty Japanese garden and a mini zoo which includes fauna native to Meghalaya?s forests, such as hornbills, leopard cats and the aptly named slow Loris, a ferret ? like creature that crawls around as though heavily drugged. The park is situated between the huge grounds of Pine Mount School on one side, the Shillong Rose Garden and the Shillong Civil Hospital campus on the other. The park extends over an area of about a kilometer in length.

The State Museum:- The State Museum is also located in the premises of the State Library. The museum has a nice and huge collection of artifacts of Meghalaya and of north-eastern India in general.

For more details you can visit Attractions in Shillong
Enjoy!
