History

Thiksey Monastery is regarded as one of the most famous in our country. The monastery is located 19 km from Leh. Because it is located on top of a hill, the entire place appears incredibly attractive. The Thiksey Monastery history starts from the 15th century. The tradition was created following the inspirations of the Buddhist monk Paldan Sherab. Panchen Sonam Dragpa followed the teachings of the Gelugpa branch in Tibetan Buddhism. Here, the Dalai Lama once spent his time learning and studying.

The town where the monastery was built was very small. After a period, the monastery was constructed on Thiksey Hill. Realizing their improvements as monks, they could have understood that their original place in the world was wrong for them. The place itself had plenty of space and it was very calm. Throughout the years, many additional halls for prayer and worship were built in the city. A monastery consists of 12 levels. This place contains shrines, a library and a place where the monks reside. This fantastic building is 15 meters tall and took four years to finish. As a result, the statue was set up in Canada when the Dalai Lama came in 1970.
