Overview

Hemis monastery Ladakh is a richly endowed monastery that belongs to the Drukpa lineage of Buddhism. Surrounded by the Himalayan mountains, it is famous for two day religious event – Hemis festival which holds every year. During this festival, the main attraction is the unfurling of the religious painting (giant thangka). If we talk about Hemis monastery museum, it has a large collection of gold statues, Thangkas, Tibetan books, and stupas embedded with carriers, weapons, precious stones and also, a stuffed vulture pup.

History

Buddhist master Naropa has established Hemis monastery Ladakh in the 11th century who was the guru of the Tibetan translator Marpa. It was renovated by King Sengge Namgyal in the 17th century later on. This monastery is also considered as the main spiritual center for the Drukpa Lineage.
