Nestled in the heart of Leh Ladakh, Shey monastery is the must-visit monastery, referred as Shey Gompa/Shey Palace. This vintage monastery is situated at the distance of 15 KM from Leh. It is built back in 1655. What makes it extraordinary? It has the tallest statue of Shakyamuni Buddha approximate 12 meter (39 ft) high. Until the Namgyal dynasty, Shey was a royal residence which was moved further to Stok Palace. It is a true blend of spiritual ambience, incredible architecture and historical significance. History
King Deldan Namgyal built Shey monastery in the memory of his late father Singay Namgyal. When it comes to gompa, it is served as a summer retreat to the Kings of Ladakh.
