History of the Namgyal Tsemo Monastery
King Tashi Namgyal founded Namgyal Tsemo Monastery in the year 1430. Namgyal Tsemo is also known as Victory Peak to mark the king’s success . Because of his belief in Avalokitesvara, King Tashi Namgyal constructed the monastery in order to give thanks and show his strength. He believes it was the vision that helped him win and keep Leh safe. You can still see the original signs of strength and peace at the monastery today.

Namgyal Tsemo is 2 kilometers above Leh. You can hike up for about 15 to 20 minutes to reach the monastery from Leh Palace. You could also go in a car or a cab. Leh’s weather from May to September makes it the best time to visit Namgyal Tsemo Monastery. The area is sunny and the view from the top is amazing during spring.
