Places To Visit

Most people visit Meghalaya for waterfalls and scenic drives, but once you spend a few days here you will know that this state has much more than you expected. Shillong has its own music culture, Dawki changes completely with the season, and Cherrapunji rarely looks the same twice in a day.
If you are searching for the best places to visit in Meghalaya, this guide covers the destinations that are actually worth your time along with practical travel insights from real on-ground experience.

Tourist Places in Meghalaya Shillong

Shillong does not feel like a typical hill station packed only with viewpoints and tourist markets. The city has a strong cafe and music culture, especially around Laitumkhrah and Police Bazaar area. Even small cafes often host live music sessions on weekends. Most tourists stay around Police Bazaar, but travelers looking for a quieter and more relaxed experience can choose to stay near Ward’s Lake and Laitumkhrah. These areas feel calmer and give you a better chance to explore Shillong at a slower pace. Shillong also works as the best base for exploring Meghalaya because roads to Cherrapunji, Dawki, and Mawphlang are well connected from here. Most travelers spend 2 to 3 days in Shillong before moving deeper into the Khasi Hills. You can visit Shillong Peak, Elephant Falls, Ward’s Lake, Don Bosco Museum, and nearby cafes in one full day. Cherrapunji (Sohra)
The drive from Shillong to Cherrapunji changes quickly once the fog starts rolling into the hills. Some stretches suddenly open into deep valleys while others disappear behind clouds within minutes. Cherrapunji is famous for waterfalls, caves, and dramatic viewpoints, but weather decides what you actually see. Nohkalikai Falls, Seven Sisters Falls, Mawsmai Cave, and Eco Park are the main attractions here. During monsoon, waterfalls become massive but visibility often drops because of heavy fog. Winter gives clearer views but some waterfalls look thinner. Most travelers underestimate how spread out Cherrapunji attractions are. You need a full day at minimum, and two days feel more relaxed. Keep backup plans while visiting Cherrapunji. Rain and fog regularly change visibility even during non-monsoon months. Dawki
Dawki became famous because of social media photos, but the place still feels impressive in person when the weather stays clear. During winter, especially from November to February, the Umngot River turns so transparent that boats look like they are floating in mid-air. The drive itself is part of the experience. Roads pass through quiet Khasi villages, forest stretches, and open valley views before reaching the river. The Umngot River is the main attraction, but the drive to Dawki through winding Khasi hills is equally memorable. The area near the India-Bangladesh border also attracts visitors. Morning usually offers calmer water and better visibility. By afternoon, tourist crowds increase heavily during peak season. Small roadside stalls near the boating area mostly sell snacks and tea. Avoid weekends if possible. Boat queues become very long during holidays and the peaceful atmosphere disappears quickly.

Mawlynnong

Mawlynnong is often marketed as the cleanest village in Asia. The village is definitely clean and organized, but many travelers expect a huge sightseeing destination and leave disappointed. It works better as a short peaceful stop rather than a full-day attraction. The bamboo skywalk gives views of Bangladesh plains, and village walks feel calm compared to crowded tourist spots. Roads are narrow but manageable for regular cars. Local homes often sell tea, snacks, and small handmade products. Spending a slow morning here feels better than rushing through for photographs. Combine Mawlynnong with Dawki on the same route instead of planning a separate full-day trip only for the village. Laitlum Canyon Laitlum Canyon surprised me more than many famous Meghalaya attractions. The road stays quiet, tourist crowds remain smaller, and the open valley views feel raw compared to commercial viewpoints. Clouds move very quickly here. One moment the canyon stays completely visible, and ten minutes later thick fog covers everything. Early mornings usually give the clearest views. There are steep stairways leading toward villages below, but most travelers stop near the main viewpoint. Carry water because shops around the canyon are limited. Do not depend fully on Google weather forecasts here. Conditions change rapidly within an hour.

Nongriat Double Decker Root Bridge

The trek to Nongriat is beautiful but much harder than many online videos make it look. You need to climb down thousands of steps through forests and hanging bridges before reaching the Double Decker Living Root Bridge. The bridge itself feels unique because local Khasi communities shaped the roots over generations instead of building with concrete or steel. Natural pools near the bridge stay cold throughout the year. Most people complete the trek in one day from Cherrapunji, but staying overnight in Nongriat feels less rushed. Early morning around the bridge feels far more peaceful than afternoon. Wear proper trekking shoes. The staircase becomes slippery after rain and basic sneakers lose grip quickly. If you are planning a well-paced Northeast trip, these Meghalaya holiday packages can help you cover the major attractions comfortably while still giving you enough time to actually enjoy the experience instead of rushing between stops.
