How To Reach

Most travelers think reaching Meghalaya is difficult until they actually do the trip. The roads are better than many Northeast routes, and Shillong is well connected from Guwahati. If you are searching for how to reach Meghalaya, the easiest route is flying to Guwahati and driving into the hills. The moment you leave Assam and start climbing toward Shillong, the air feels cooler and the traffic slowly disappears.

How to Reach Meghalaya by Flight

The nearest major airport to Meghalaya is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, Assam. Almost every traveler entering Meghalaya uses this airport because flight options are better and less expansive than Shillong Airport.

Shillong Airport at Umroi exists, but flights are limited and often get delayed during heavy rain or fog. From Guwahati Airport, Shillong is around 100 km away and usually takes 2 to 3 hours depending on traffic near Nongpoh.

Shared cabs from Guwahati Airport to Shillong cost around Rs. 500 to Rs. 700 per person. Private taxis usually charge Rs. 3000 to Rs. 4500.
Honest Tip: Avoid landing after 5 PM during monsoon season. Fog becomes heavy near Umiam Lake and many drivers slow down significantly after dark.

How to Reach Meghalaya by Train

Meghalaya still does not have a major railway station connected to the rest of India. Guwahati Railway Station is the nearest and most convenient  option for train travelers.

One of our customers says, “I once took an overnight train from Delhi, and the biggest surprise was how organized the shared taxi system outside Guwahati Railway Station felt compared to many tourist cities. Shillong-bound taxis start filling up early in the morning.”

From Guwahati Railway Station, Shillong is around 100 km away. Shared sumos and taxis are available from Paltan Bazar near the station.

Travel Time:
• Guwahati to Shillong: 2 to 3.5 hours
• Taxi Fare: Rs. 500 to Rs. 700 per person

Honest Tip: Do not take random taxis directly outside the station gate without comparing prices. Drivers often quote double rates during tourist season.

How to Reach Meghalaya by Road

Road travel is the most scenic and flexible way to enter Meghalaya. NH 6 connects Guwahati with Shillong, Cherrapunji, Dawki, and other major destinations.
The drive becomes beautiful after Umiam Lake. Most travelers stop there for tea and photos, but very few stay long enough to notice how quickly the weather changes. You can see  sunshine turn into thick clouds within fifteen minutes near the viewpoint.
Government buses, shared sumos, and private taxis run daily from Guwahati to Shillong. Self-driving is possible too, but hill driving during monsoon can feel stressful for first-time visitors.

Approximate Travel Costs:
• Government Bus: Rs. 250 to Rs. 400
• Shared Sumo: Rs. 500 to Rs. 700
• Private Cab: Rs. 3000 onwards
Honest Tip: If you get motion sickness, carry medicine before leaving Guwahati. The road after Nongpoh has continuous curves.

How to Reach Shillong from Guwahati

Shillong is usually the first stop for travelers visiting Meghalaya. The route from Guwahati to Shillong is smooth compared to many Himalayan roads.
Shared taxis leave from Paltan Bazar almost every hour during the day. Most drivers stop once near Nongpoh for snacks and tea. Try the local pineapple sold by roadside vendors during summer. It tastes much sweeter than what you usually find in cities.
The total journey takes around 3 hours in light traffic.

Honest Tip: Sit on the left side of the vehicle while going toward Shillong. You get better valley and lake views near Umiam.

Best Time to Travel to Meghalaya

October to April is the best period for comfortable road trips and sightseeing. The skies stay clearer and waterfalls still carry enough water after the monsoon.
The monsoon season from June to September completely changes Meghalaya. Waterfalls become massive, but landslides and road delays are common near Cherrapunji and Dawki routes.
Winter nights in Shillong can drop below 5°C, especially in December and January.
Honest Tip: Carry a rain jacket in every season. Meghalaya weather changes fast even when the forecast looks clear.

Reaching Meghalaya is now much easier than it was a few years ago due to recent infrastructure development. Flights, trains, and road connections through Guwahati make the journey convenient for both budget travelers and families. The roads may feel long at times, but the views of clouds moving across the hills and the peaceful villages make the journey memorable in itself.
