A tea estate is one of the experiences you should not miss in Nuwara Eliya. Walk between the neatly arranged tea bushes, watch tea leaves being picked and learn how Ceylon tea is produced. Most importantly, take time to enjoy the mountain views rather than rushing through the visit.
Gregory Lake is a good place to relax after visiting the tea estates. You can walk along the lakeside, enjoy the views, take photographs or try activities available around the lake. The cool weather makes it particularly pleasant during the morning and late afternoon.
For a quieter activity, head to Victoria Park, located near the centre of Nuwara Eliya. Its landscaped paths, greenery and seasonal flowers make it suitable for a relaxed walk. It is also a good option if you are travelling with family.
The cool highland climate allows strawberries to grow around Nuwara Eliya. At a local strawberry farm, you can see how the fruit is cultivated and try fresh strawberries, juice or other strawberry-based products.
Take a slow walk through the town to see its British-era architecture. Historic buildings, old hotels and the famous post office reflect the colonial influence that gave Nuwara Eliya the nickname “Little England.”
For Indian travellers, Seetha Amman Temple can add a meaningful cultural stop to the trip. The temple is associated with the Ramayana and is believed to be connected with the story of Sita's stay in Sri Lanka. You can visit the temple, observe the religious traditions and spend some time around the nearby stream.
After sightseeing, stop at a local café for a cup of Ceylon tea. You can also try Sri Lankan favourites such as rice and curry, hoppers, kottu and roti. Nuwara Eliya's cooler climate makes a warm cup of tea especially enjoyable.
