Places To Visit

Planning a Dambulla trip gives you more than one famous attraction to see. The town is a good starting point for ancient temples, local markets, historic sites, rock formations and wildlife experiences. Some attractions are within Dambulla, while others are close enough to cover as part of the same sightseeing route.

Dambulla Cave Temple

Start with the Dambulla Cave Temple, the most important attraction in the town. Located on a rocky hill, the temple has five main caves filled with Buddha statues, murals and religious artwork. You can climb the steps, explore each cave and see how Buddhist art has been preserved over centuries.

The temple is within Dambulla, making it an easy first stop. A specific fact worth knowing: Dambulla Cave Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered one of Sri Lanka's best-preserved cave temple complexes.

Dambulla Dedicated Economic Centre

From the cave temple, you can continue to the Dambulla Dedicated Economic Centre, located around 5 km away. This is a different kind of attraction where you can see the everyday side of the town.

The centre is a major wholesale market for fruits and vegetables. You can walk through the busy market, see local traders handling fresh produce and get a glimpse of how agricultural products move across Sri Lanka. Early morning is the best time to experience the market at its busiest.

Specific fact: Dambulla's location makes its market an important trading point for agricultural produce from several parts of the country.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress

Next, continue towards Sigiriya Rock Fortress, around 20 km from Dambulla. This ancient rock site is one of the most important attractions in Sri Lanka and can be planned as a half-day or full-day outing from Dambulla.

You can climb the rock, walk through the ancient gardens, see the Lion's Paw and frescoes, and enjoy views of the surrounding landscape.

Specific fact: Sigiriya rises around 200 metres above the surrounding plains and is also recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Pidurangala Rock

If you are already visiting Sigiriya, Pidurangala Rock is a natural next stop. It is located only a few kilometres from Sigiriya and around 18–20 km from Dambulla.

The main reason to visit is the panoramic view of Sigiriya Rock. You can hike to the viewpoint and, if you start early, watch the sunrise over the surrounding landscape.

Specific fact: Pidurangala is especially known for its direct viewpoint towards Sigiriya, making it popular with travellers looking for a different perspective of the famous rock fortress.

Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium

Back in Dambulla, cricket fans can include the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in their sightseeing. It is around 2–3 km from central Dambulla, making it an easy stop if you are interested in cricket.

You can visit the area when a match or event is taking place and see the stadium's setting among the surrounding greenery.

Specific fact: The stadium is located close to the Rangiri Dambulla reservoir, giving it a more scenic setting than many city cricket grounds.

Minneriya National Park

For wildlife, you can travel around 50 km from Dambulla to Minneriya National Park. A jeep safari takes you through grasslands, forests and areas around the reservoir where you may see elephants, birds and other wildlife.

The experience changes with the season, so your safari should be planned according to current wildlife conditions.

Specific fact: Minneriya is famous for the seasonal Elephant Gathering, when large groups of elephants gather around the reservoir.

Kaudulla National Park

Another option for wildlife lovers is Kaudulla National Park, around 65 km from Dambulla. You can take a jeep safari through the park and look for elephants, deer, birds and other animals.

Kaudulla can be considered along with Minneriya when planning a wildlife-focused day, depending on where the animals are active during your visit.

Kaudulla forms part of an important elephant corridor connecting wildlife areas in central Sri Lanka.
