For Indian travellers, Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is the main international gateway to Dambulla. Flights to Colombo are available from major Indian cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Kochi, depending on current airline schedules.
From the airport, Dambulla is around 135–150 km by road. A private taxi or car generally takes around 3.5 to 4.5 hours, depending on traffic and the route. This is the most convenient option if you are travelling with family or luggage.
Dambulla does not have its own railway station. Habarana Railway Station, around 25 km from Dambulla, is one of the nearby railway connections. From Habarana, you can continue to Dambulla by taxi or bus.
Train travel is more useful for travellers who are already exploring Sri Lanka by rail. For someone arriving directly from India, travelling by road from Colombo airport is generally simpler.
Dambulla is connected by bus with Colombo, Kandy, Anuradhapura, Sigiriya, and other major towns. Buses are a budget-friendly option, although the journey can take longer than a private car.
If you are planning to visit Dambulla Cave Temple, Sigiriya, Pidurangala or nearby attractions, staying in Dambulla can make it easier to cover several places from one base.
