Located at an altitude of 4,430 feet, Mokokchung is one of the largest and oldest villages in Nagaland. It is one of the prominent urban centers in Nagaland after Kohima and Dimapur. Out of the 16 tribes of Nagaland, Mokokchung is home to Ao Naga. The word Mokokchung means a group of people who left their native home rather unwillingly. Although almost all Ao Nagas have converted to Christianity, they have still kept alive their old customs and traditions that are very well visible through their hospitality during Christmas time. Irrespective of their financial or social status, they welcome each other warmly in their homes.
Known to preserve cultural heritage, people visiting Mokokchung can witness the ancient hospitality and traditions that would give them a perfect insight into the historical culture of the North East. Apart from Christmas, the people of Mokokchung Village celebrate their traditional festivals including Moatsü and Tsungremong. While Moatsü is celebrated to honor the creator of the Earth including doing prayers for a fruitful cultivation season, Tsungremong is held during the 1st week of August to celebrate successful harvesting.
This old village has several tribes residing together who speak in a singular dialect of Monsen. This village is a part of the most culturally and traditionally rich districts of Nagaland.
