Things To Do

If you are looking for the best things to do in Sikkim, you are already making a great travel decision. Sikkim is one of those places that truly surprises you. You go expecting pretty mountains and come back with stories you will tell for years. It is a small state but packed with experiences that bigger states simply cannot match. Here is everything worth doing when you are there.
You can experience all of this in a single budget Sikkim tour package.

Go Trekking - Sikkim's Trails Are Truly Something Else

If you've only trekked in Himachal or Uttarakhand, Sikkim's trails will feel completely different, quieter, wilder, and more raw. The Goecha La Trek gets you closer to Kanchenjunga than almost anywhere else on earth. Dzongri is perfect if you're a first-timer wanting big views without extreme difficulty. And if you want something almost nobody does, the Green Lake Trek is pure, untouched Himalayan wilderness.

Spend Time at the Monasteries - Not Just for Photos

Most people visit monasteries for a quick photo and leave. Don't do that. Sit for a while at Rumtek or Pemayangtse, watch the monks, listen to the chants, feel the stillness. These are living, breathing spiritual spaces that have stood for centuries. Tashiding especially has an energy that's hard to explain until you've been there.

Walk Around Gangtok - It's More Than Just a Base Camp

Most travelers treat Gangtok as just a starting point. That's a mistake. MG Marg in the evening has genuinely lovely, good food, local shops, mountain air, and a surprisingly lively atmosphere. Spend a morning at the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, grab momos from a street stall, and just walk. Gangtok rewards slow exploration.

Try an Adventure Activity - At Least One

Sikkim has river rafting on the Teesta, paragliding over Gangtok, zip-lining, mountain biking, and even yak riding near Tsomgo Lake. You don't have to be an adrenaline junkie, even a short rafting session on the Teesta is exhilarating and something most people remember long after the trip ends.

Visit Khangchendzonga National Park

This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to red pandas, snow leopards, and over 550 species of butterflies. Most tourists skip it  which honestly just means more of it for you. Whether you're a wildlife photographer or just someone who appreciates untouched nature, this park is worth every bit of effort to reach.

Tsomgo Lake & Nathula Pass - Do Both Together

These two iconic spots sit close to each other and are best covered in a single day trip from Gangtok. Tsomgo Lake at 12,400 ft is sacred, stunning, and often partially frozen and genuinely breathtaking. Nathula Pass at 14,140 ft is the historic Indo-China border and carries a completely different, almost surreal energy. You'll need permits but it's absolutely worth the paperwork.

Yumthang Valley in Bloom - Pure Magic

If your trip falls between April and May, do not miss Yumthang Valley. The entire valley floor turns into a carpet of rhododendrons in every shade of red, pink, purple, and white. Locals call it the Valley of Flowers for a reason. Pair it with a visit to Gurudongmar Lake if you can, one of the highest and most stunning lakes in the world at 17,800 ft.

Catch a Local Festival if Timing Allows

Losar, Saga Dawa, and Pang Lhabsol are festivals unlike anything you'll see elsewhere in India. They're deeply rooted, visually spectacular, and incredibly welcoming to outsiders. If your travel dates overlap with any of these, adjust your itinerary around them. You won't regret it.

Visit Temi Tea Garden - Slow Down Here

Sikkim's Temi Tea Garden is India's only certified organic tea estate and one of its most scenic. Walk through the terraced rows with Kanchenjunga watching over you, try a freshly brewed cup of Sikkim orthodox tea, and just breathe. It's the kind of place that reminds you why you travel in the first place.

Head to North Sikkim for the Offbeat Experience

Lachen, Lachung, and Zuluk are for those who want Sikkim without the tourist crowds. The roads are dramatic, the villages are quiet, and the night skies are among the clearest you'll ever see. Zuluk's 32 hairpin bends along the old Silk Route is one of those drives that stays with you permanently.
