The olden times of Dadra and Nagar Haveli previous to the medieval period remains muddled. In AD 1262, a Rajput invader overpowered the local Koli heads of clan of the area and became the ruler of a place called Ramnagar, which is a small state that included Nagar Haveli in its territory. The county stayed under Rajput rule until the mid-18th century. After that, the Marathas acquired the land. After protracted skirmishes between the Portuguese and Marathas, on 17 December 1779, the Maratha Government allocated the collective returns in a few villages of this territory. The region was fused with the Indian Union on 11 August 1961 as a Union Territory.
