<div>I had been planning to visit Kasauli for a long. So one September night I decided to check out this quiet hill station in Himachal Pradesh’s Solan district. I took an early morning train to Kalka the next day. From here I boarded a toy train to a small station called Dharampur, which is at an elevation of around 1500 meters from sea level. Then suddenly it stopped at a small bus stop. I got down and began my search for a reasonably priced-yet-good hotel. It was unlike other hill stations where one could spot hotels everywhere. This military town has escaped the ‘touristification’, thanks to the army. Traffic is regularised, with no vehicles allowed into the small market, which still has a cobbled path. The two main roads the little hill station has been called the Lower Mall and the Upper Mall. It’s just the name, no rows of shops here. Just half a dozen or so makeshift shops run by Tibetans selling jackets, woolens, T-shirts and other usual stuff one finds at such markets everywhere.</div><div><br></div><div>There were few picnickers sipping tea and coffee, as monkeys walked by or jumped from branch to branch on trees around, at a biggish grocery store-cum-restaurant, which had a lot of space in front of it for the visitors to sit.</div><div><br></div><div>After trying a couple of hotels I knew names of I finally settled for a guesthouse situated at the end of the road near old Kasauli overlooking the valley below. It was pretty beautiful sight watching mist trapped in pine trees. I rested for sometime before I got out again and just walked on the roads checking them out where did they lead. It is on this road that all the important buildings are situated. This road has the highest elevation in Kasauli, gives you the best views on both sides. My ultimate destination was ‘Monkey Point’, which is a temple on another mountain. I was advised to take this road as far as Gilbert’s Trail (a nature walk) and then take a left turn from near a Litter Box. When the hotel manager told me about this box, I thought he was talking about some Letter Box because he said it was of old-style and one certainly did not think of Litter Box being there. When I saw many of them I realized he meant Litter Box. And, what Litter Boxes! A beautiful small hut type box, which did not at all, looked like it contained garbage. It is on the Upper Mall road that grand old man of letters Khuswant Singh has his summer hideaway. No wonder every summer he runs away from the scorching heat of Delhi to indulge in some serious writing.</div><div><br></div><div>After I reached the signboard of Gilbert’s Trail, I took left turn and the short path connected me to the Lower Mall road. From here turn right takes one to the gate of Air Force Station. One has to collect pass go up to the Monkey Point as it is under the Air Force control. If you have a camera and mobile phones, you will have to leave them behind before you enter the Air Force Station. A 20-minute walk will take you to the Monkey Point. A small temple dedicated to Hanumanji (Monkey God) is situated there. Also, you can view snow-capped mountains from here if the sky is clear.</div><div><br></div><div>If you are going by car, then you will have to take the Lower Mall road. But the best way is to walk taking the Upper Mall road and then joining the Lower Mall road. While coming back, walk on the Lower Mall road to see the other side. Slow driving on winding roads and negotiating hairpin bends makes the journey real fun. We had hardly moved few kilometers that I saw several cars parked on one side of the road and their occupants were looking down into the valley. We also stopped and joined the crowd. What I saw in the valley was an amazing display of greenery I had never seen before.</div><div><br></div><div>It was so dense and green; it appeared not an inch was without some green tree or plant. No wonder, it’s named ‘Green Valley’. After spending some time there I again started on my journey to Kufri. We finally stopped at a place which to me looked like some horse market. It was not at all what I had thought of. All I could see was lot of cars parked here and there with horses occupying the rest of the space. My taxi driver told me I would have to take horse to go up to Kufri. The rates were fixed for the to and fro horse ride. I settled for a horse handled by an innocent looking teenage boy.</div><div><br></div><div>The path was not very steep, though at some places we had to be careful due to uneven track. My horse ‘master’ instructed me to bend forward when horse is climbing and pull backward when it’s going down. When we reached an open field, the teenage boy told me ‘this is Kufri’.</div><div><br></div><div>I was not impressed. I had thought it would be some green meadow but there was no sign of any green there. All I could see was garbage thrown everywhere; couple of yaks being paraded by their owners for hire to sit on and get photographed and few kiosks selling foodstuff and drinks. There were horse droppings everywhere. I am told during winter Kufri gets good snow and tourists, especially honeymooners, throng it to play in the snow. I was there in the month of November, which is not the time for snow. So you if plan to visit Kufri, try to schedule your trip towards the end of December. If you are lucky, you might see Kufri in its full beauty. My horse handler was pretty good. He did his best to make my ride worthwhile with his info nuggets, mainly what all films were shot there. He pointed to a small hut, which he said was used in the movie called ‘King Uncle’ (starring Jackie Shroff and Shahrukh Khan). He also mentioned about a tree shown in the hit movie ‘Pyar Jhukta Nahin’ starring Mithun Chakraborty and Padmini Kolhapure.</div><div><br></div><div>The said tree has the heart carved by the two lovers and has become a picnic spot for honeymooning couples since then.</div><div><br></div><div>After doing the Kufri round I went to the adjacent Himalayan Deer Park where I spotted couple of deer, which are in danger of getting extinct! <div>Shimla is the biggest hill station in India. It’s no surprise because it was the summer capital of British India. Post-independence Shimla has been the Honeymooner’s Paradise in north India.<br></div><div><br></div><div>For my first trip to Shimla, I took Kalka Mail from Delhi to Kalka. After an overnight journey, I reached the sleepy little station of Kalka around 5.30 in the morning. From Kalka, I had one of the most beautiful train journeys one can have. The journey, some 90-KM long, was done on a toy train. It was November 8, 2003, just a day before that railway line was about to complete its 100 years. I was traveling on the same train, which was supposed to make the historic journey the next day, marking the hundred years of this wonderful gift of British India. You can blame them for a lot of bad things they did to India during their rule here but you have to give it the firangs (As British rulers were called then), they took the trains to the kind of places where Indians have not been able to even 60 years after getting independence. The toy train passes through some 103 tunnels, one of them, at Barog, is more than a kilometer long. That’s not all. It uses more than 800 bridges to reach Shimla!</div><div><br></div><div>My train, Shivalik Deluxe Express, stopped at Barog - a beautiful little station. The stop was for 10 minutes where most of the passengers got down while catering staff collected breakfast to be served on the train. It was a lovely experience; early morning sunshine made me feel in a different world.</div><div><br></div><div>The train was full of honeymooners, as it was the marriage season in India. Some of the couples seemed in a hurry to get lost in each other’s arms. Since it was a toy train that has small coaches, people were seated pretty close to each other.</div><div><br></div><div>I arrived at Shimla station around 10.30 am. Starting from 660 mts at Kalka, I was now about 2000 Mts above sea level. Immediately I was surrounded by Kashmiri potters. I negotiated with one of them and he helped me climb out of the station where I was met by the cab drivers. After bargaining, one of them drove me to my hotel. After checking into the hotel, a Raj-era building, I took a shower and had brunch. I checked with the hotel manager about the places I could see in the remaining day. He suggested I walk up to the Mall Road that quintessential Raj left-over. Acting on his advice I decided to walk to the Mall. I was surprised to see so many tall deodar trees on both sides of the road before I reached the actual hustle and bustle of the Mall. It was the same as the other Mall Roads. It feels as if all eateries asking you to ‘come and try’ the delicious fare. I went inside a restaurant, which served north Indian, south Indian, Chinese food and whatever you can think of. To be frank, it was awful. I ordered a pizza and that did not look like the pizzas one had seen or eaten before! After that misadventure with food, I walked up to the Ridge. It has, for years, been used for all kinds of functions. During British rule, it was used to hold military parades. Sahebs and memsahibs used to enjoy romantic evenings. There, you even have a place called Scandal Point, thus named because it is said that some officer’s wife had run away with an Indian prince from that very point!</div><div><br></div><div>I walked back to my hotel as it became dark and cold. The mountain air was having its effect.</div><div><br></div><div>The next day I visited Kufri, came back to The Mall Road, and did some roaming around.</div><div><br></div><div>On my last day in Shimla, I went to see Viceregal Lodge from where British Viceroy ruled all over India for six months during summer. The Lodge now houses IIAS (Indian Institute of Advanced Studies). It was a magnificent building with a well-maintained and beautiful lawn in front of it. It was in this building that India’s destiny was decided by the Britishers. The tables and chairs have been kept as it is and every half an hour a tour is conducted with a guide to give you a glimpse of the history.</div><div><br></div><div>The visit to Viceregal Lodge was worth it. I am now better informed about the goings-on in the final hours before India got its independence.</div><div><br></div><div><b>How to Reach: </b>The best way to visit Shimla is train journey. <p>There are different types of busses and most of them start from the Chanderlok Building, Janpath, and New Delhi.</p>


<p>Buses starts from Delhi around 18.30 and arrives at Manali at 10.00 AM (add some delay of one or two hours), There are some buses from Delhi after 18.30 also.</p>


<p>On return buses starts from Manali around 1.30 PM and continues till 5.00 PM and arrive at Delhi early morning.</p>

<p>You can do white water rafting in piridi in kullu, its 14 or 7 km. routs the cost of 14 km is 400 to 600Rs. per person and for 7km is 200 t0 300Rs. per person. paragliding there is cost Rs 600 to 1200 Rs..</p>
