Whether you have a few hours or a full day, arranging the attractions in the right order can make your visit more relaxed. If Galle is part of a longer holiday, you can also check Sri Lanka Travel Packages to combine it with other destinations.
Start your journey at Galle Fort, the main sightseeing area in the city. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is known for its old streets, colonial buildings, cafés, shops, and views of the Indian Ocean. Take your time walking through the fort because most of the next attractions are located within walking distance.
From the central area of Galle Fort, continue towards the Galle Lighthouse. The walk takes only a few minutes, depending on where you start. The lighthouse stands close to the sea and is a good place to stop for photographs and coastal views.
After visiting the lighthouse, walk back through the streets of the fort towards the Dutch Reformed Church. It is also located within Galle Fort, so you can easily cover it without taking a vehicle. The church gives you a closer look at the city's Dutch history and old architecture.
Your next stop can be the National Maritime Museum, located near the entrance area of Galle Fort. It is within walking distance from the Dutch Reformed Church and other attractions inside the fort. The museum is a good choice if you want to understand Sri Lanka's connection with the sea and maritime history.
From the museum, continue towards the Galle Fort Clock Tower, which is also close to the fort entrance. You can reach it with a short walk. The tower is one of the landmarks along the fort walls and can easily be included in the same sightseeing route.
After finishing your walk around the fort, head towards the Galle International Cricket Stadium, located just outside the fort area. Depending on your starting point, it is roughly a 5–15-minute walk. Even if there is no match, the stadium is worth seeing because of its unusual location between the historic fort and the coast.
The places to visit in Galle are easy to connect into one sightseeing route. You can start inside Galle Fort, cover the lighthouse, church, museum, and Clock Tower on foot, and then finish near the cricket stadium. This allows you to spend more time enjoying the destination instead of travelling between attractions.
