Places to Visit

Sissu is a peaceful mountain village in the Lahaul Valley known for its natural beauty and breathtaking mountain views. Travelers visiting this Himalayan destination can explore waterfalls scenic viewpoints riverside spots and adventure experiences while enjoying the calm atmosphere of the valley.
From the famous Sissu Waterfall to the beautiful Chandra River every place in Sissu offers a unique travel experience. The village is also a perfect stop for travelers exploring Lahaul Spiti and the Atal Tunnel route.

Sissu Waterfall — Palden Lhamo Dhar The waterfall situated about 1 km from the village on the other side of the Chandra River. You can reach it by crossing the bridge on foot or taking a zipline across,  the zipline is worth doing at least once just for the view mid crossing. The waterfall itself changes completely by season. In summer it is powerful and loud. In winter it freezes into dramatic ice formations that look almost sculpted. Both versions are worth seeing but the frozen winter version is genuinely extraordinary.

Entry Fee: Free | Zipline Rs. 400 per person Time Needed: 1 to 1.5 hours Honest Tip: The path to the waterfall base can be slippery in winter. Wear proper shoes and do not rush the descent.

Sissu Helipad Viewpoint The helipad sits on a flat elevated patch above the village and gives you one of the most complete views of the entire Sissu Valley. It is the kind of view that makes you stand quietly for a few minutes without reaching for your phone. Sunset here turns the sky shades of orange and deep pink against the white peaks is  one of those sights that is genuinely difficult to describe accurately and needs to be seen.

Entry Fee: Free Time Needed: 30 minutes Honest Tip: Go 20 minutes before sunset for the best light. Carry a warm layer — it gets cold quickly once the sun drops.

Gondhla Fort About 14 to 18 km from Sissu sits Gondhla Fort is a multi storey tower fort built in the 17th century from timber and stone in Tibetan architectural style. It is partially in ruins but that only adds to its character. Most Sissu visitors never make it here which means you often have the place almost entirely to yourself. The views of the Chandra River valley from the fort grounds alone make the detour worthwhile.

Distance: 14 to 18 km from Sissu Entry Fee: Free or minimal Time Needed: 45 to 60 minutes Honest Tip: Best visited on your way in or out of Sissu rather than as a standalone trip. Factor it into your route naturally.

Ghepan Lake Trek Ghepan Lake is Sissu's best kept secret and genuinely one of the most stunning high altitude lakes in the entire Lahaul Valley. The trek is moderate to challenging, takes around 3 to 4 hours return, and rewards you with a crystal clear blue glacial lake surrounded by snow dusted peaks that very few travelers ever see. This is not a casual stroll,  go with a local guide, carry water bottle and snacks, also start early in the morning.

Distance: 5 to 6 km trek from Sissu Difficulty: Moderate to challenging Time Needed: Half day Honest Tip: Do not attempt this alone. Hire a local guide from the village — they know the trail and the weather patterns better than any app.

Chandra River Banks The Chandra River runs right through Sissu and its banks are perfect for travelers who want to do absolutely nothing for a while. Sit by the water, listen to it move over the rocks, and let the mountains do the rest. If you want activity, zipline and river rafting options are available here too. But honestly the river is just as rewarding without any of that.

Entry Fee: Free | Activity charges vary Time Needed: As long as you want Best For: Relaxation, photography, riverside activities.

Atal Tunnel North Portal Most travelers drive through the tunnel without stopping at the north portal on the Sissu side. Stop here for 10 minutes on your way out. The scale of the tunnel entrance against the surrounding mountains is genuinely impressive and it marks the point where Manali side Himachal gives way to the Lahaul Valley properly. Worth a photograph and a quiet moment.

Entry Fee: Tunnel toll for vehicles Time Needed: 10 to 15 minutes Honest Tip: Pull over safely and keep it brief — this is an active road with consistent traffic movement.

Sissu Camping Camping in Sissu on a clear night is one of unforgetable experiences that stays with you permanently. The sky here away from city light pollution is extraordinary — the kind of stargazing that makes you feel genuinely small in the best possible way. Sangam River camp near the Chandra River is the most popular site.

Best Season: May to October Price: Rs. 400 per tent onwards | Full packages from Rs. 2,500 Honest Tip: Book in advance during June to September. Good camping spots in Sissu fill up faster than most travelers expect.

Keylong — Worth a Half Day Trip Keylong is 30 km from Sissu and makes for a perfect half day extension. It is the main town of Lahaul and Spiti district with local markets selling woolen jackets, shawls, carpets, and natural oils at prices significantly lower than Manali. The Kardang Monastery nearby is one of the most impressive in the entire Lahaul Valley and worth the short climb to reach it.
