Kumarakom Travel Guide

Kumarakom, a small tourist village located 16 km west of Kottayam district of Kerala. Though technically it is an island on Vembanad Lake sited right in the thick tangle of lush tropical waterways.

The beauty of this places cant be described in words. The Vembanad Lake is a long meaningful sentence that describes its own beauty, punctuated by the precise and elegant commas of palm trees, now mysteriously dark, simultaneously saintly and romantic.

The Kumarakom bird sanctuary, protected by a thick cluster of mangroves is home to more than 180 species of birds, which is a huge attraction. The little village by the vast lake teems with water and palms, fish and birds, boats and rice, sunset and breeze. It is easy to see why National Geographic Traveler would call Kumarakom "One of The Ten Paradises On Earth". 

Kumarakom is the perfect destination to experience the famous backwaters of Kerala, enjoying picture perfect scenery that comprises of winding lagoons, coconut trees, and continual rows of paddy fields. The lake and its surrounding areas can be best explored on a houseboat.

Kumarakom is a perfect place far away from the hustle and bustle of metros, soaked in the munificence of nature.

Kumarakom is a small alluring backwater destination located on the banks of Vembanad Lake in Kerala, known for its lush, green beauty and backwaters. The perfect destination to experience the world famous backwaters of Kerala set amidst the coconut trees, and continuous rows of paddy fields.

Though this small village is a set of small islands but it can be easily reached by road from Kottayam, which is the main road junction and is connected with all the other major cities in India by a network of State Highways and National Highways.
Kumarakom does not have a railway station and an airport of its own. The nearest Airport is Kochi Airport, which is 64 kms from the city where as the major railway junction is in Kottayam, which is another 16 kms from the city.

Both Kochi and Kottayam are well connected with Kumarakom with a well-laid network of state high ways.

Kumarakom Attractions

Kumarakom is a small charismatic village located on the banks of the scenic Vembanad Lake. Kumarakom is considered as a tourist’s paradise. The beautiful lagoons, brooks, canals and waterways set amidst the coconut trees attract a lot of tourists to this region. The backwaters of the region are rich in marine life. There are several places worth to be explored. 

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

This bird sanctuary is the paradise for the bird watchers. The sanctuary is located at a distance of 15 kms from Kottayam, spread on an area of about 14 acres. The sanctuary is sited on the eastern banks of the Vembanad Lake home to about 180 species of birds. Apart from some common birds like the waterfowl, water ducks, cuckoos, wild ducks, Egret, Teal and some rare birds like Siberian Storks are also seen here at times. The best time to visit the sanctuary is between June and August. 

The Vembanad Lake

There is a large network of rivers and canals in Kottayam, which empty up into the Vembanad Lake. The lake is a beautiful picnic spot and is has developed as a backwater tourism destination. There are several activities provided at the lake, which includes boating, fishing and sightseeing. Vembanad is a amongst the largest fresh water lakes in Indian subcontinent. 

Aruvikkuzhi Waterfalls

This beautiful picnic spot is located at a distance of 18 km from Kottayam district. Here the waterfalls from a height of 100ft. a tinkling sound can be heard when the water passes through the landscape. There are large rubber plantations here where the tourists can sit under the shade. 


Pathiramanal also known as the `Sands of Midnight` is a beautiful island on Vembanad Lake. This 10-acre island is located on the backwaters of the lake and serves as home to a wide range of rare migratory birds. This place is a paradise for the bird lovers. 

Driftwood Museum

The driftwood museum displays a unique collection of fine quality driftwood articles prepared through a rare and innovative modern art form. A huge collection of root sculptures of various shapes and designs can be seen at the museum. Although Kumarkum is famous for its backwaters and scenic natural beauty but it is not considered as a hot shopping destination in Kerala. You can indulge in some relaxed shopping when you are free. You can buy souvenirs from the shops that are scattered everywhere in this small town. Apart from buying the mementoes you can also shop for the various articles made up of coconut shell, bamboo and cane.Some of items that can be shopped for in Kumarkum include the metal-ware, woodcarvings, camel-bone carvings, grass mats.

The finely hand crafted items are the most popular amongst the shoppers. In the local markets of Kumarkum you can also shop for antiques, jewelry, readymade garments, and traditional hand-woven textiles.You can also buy lampshades made of coconut shell and bamboo, earrings made of coconut shell, brass lamps, and `kathakali` masks.

There are also some restaurants in Kumarakom, which serve the mouthwatering seafood, which is generally served along with plain steamed rice. Some of the most popular dishes amongst the tourists are the Syrian Christian Duck Roast, Thamarappam, Karimeen Mappas, Duck Curry, Karimeen Pollichathu, soft spongy rice bread called Appam, Idiappams (string-hoppers), etc. besides tropical fruits, vegetables and cereals.

Ettukettu is a multi-cuisine restaurant in Kumarakom Lake Resort that serves the best and irresistible Continental, Chinese, Mughlai, North Indian and traditional Kerala delicacies. Cordon Bleu another multi-cuisine restaurant located at Backwater Ripples Hotel is popular amongst the tourists for the traditional Kerala delicacies that it offers includes the Prawns, Crabs and Oysters.

There are also some local `Toddy Shops` where you can savor the local cuisines and try the local drink.

Kottayam 16 km away from Kumarkum boasts of several multicuisine restaurants serving Continental, Chinese, American and European delicacies apart from the regional Cuisines.

Kumarakom has tropical climate, with heavy rains during the months of June-August. Winter starts from November and continues till February. During the summers the temperature in Kumarakom rises to a maximum of 35°C where as in winters it reaches 16°C. The annual average rainfall in Kumarakom is about 1100 mm.

The summer months are from March to May. During the summers the tropical climatic conditions prevail. They are warm with temperature being the maximum at 38°C during the daytime. The nights are comparatively cooler as there is a dip in the temperature that drops down to 22.6°C.
During the four months of winters i.e. November to February the temperature ranges between 18°C 16°C. The weather is cool. Winter is the ideal time to visit Kumarkum for bird lovers.

The region experiences its showers due to the southwest monsoon. Due to the tropical climate the rainfall in Kumarakom is average. The monsoon season starts from the month of June and lasts till August. Though there are some slight drizzles till November.
