Auli Through The Lense

Auli Through the Lense

If you love being near some of the highest peaks in India then visit Joshimath and nearby ski resort Auli.

My journey to Auli was one of the most arduous one considering that it takes more than 14 hours on narrow and winding roads with hair pin bends. As we neared Joshimath Mountains kept getting higher and higher with Alaknanda giving us company throughout the journey on one side. Joshimath is the place from where one of the most famous char dhams Badrinath is just 40 Kms away. And, it is from here one takes ropeway to go up to Auli. By road Auli is 14 km from this ancient town where Shankaracharya meditated under a tree and went on to revive Hinduism.

Auli, uttaranchal Article Since I reached in the evening, it was quite chilly. After checking in hotel first thing we did was to get snuggled in quilts with extra layer of blanket. We woke up to a different climate. It was raining and on higher reaches around us one could see white cotton like layer. It was a surprise because we did not expect it to snow before December 25. Around noon we went to Tapovan – a hot water spring – 14 Km away on Nitipas Highway. We began journey even as it rained. We had moved just few Kms, bit higher then Joshimath we could see sleet falling on our car front. We stopped our car and felt the sleet mixed rain. We looked up over our head towards Auli Bugyal, green trees were turning white. We kept driving and stopped at Tapovan. It was raining and here it was hot water oozing out from nowhere. Besides us, a family also stopped there to feel the hot water. Since I knew Reni village was also nearby, I wanted to see it because it was from this small village that Gaura Devi – the founder of Chipko movement hailed. She died few years ago but the village has a gate in her memory with names of other brave women and men who were ready to lay their lives to save the trees.

Next day was the big day for us because that’s when we planned to go up to Auli. But we were not certain. The ropeway was closed for the annual maintenance and road was not travel worthy because of previous day’s snow on the only road leading up to Auli. Fortunately, manager of the ropeway turned out to be my friend’s schoolmate. He told us the ropeway will make a trip for maintenance and we could accompany them.

The Journey by the Ropeway was itself an experience. The Auli ropeway is longest in Asia. As we reached close to our getting off point (10th pillar), we could see some of the highest peaks -- Mana Parbat, Hathi Ghoda Palki, Thrishul and above all the majestic Nanda Devi. As per the man on cable car Nanda Devi’s best view can be had only from Auli. It looked so close from there with naked eyes. We spent there more than an hour. The slopes were covered with half a feet of snow. We played like children there, made snowman. Threw snow at each other and just tried to capture as much as possible the beauty of this wonderful creation of nature. Unfortunately we could not try our feet at skiing since there wasn’t enough snow for that.

How to Reach: To reach Joshimath, one can take train to Haridwar and from there bus or taxi can be taken to Joshimath. It’s a long journey, so it’s better to take break at Haridwar and then move further.

Where to Stay: There are many hotels in Joshimath to choose as per one’s budget. At Auli, GMVN runs a resort and also provides skiing facilities.

2 RohitR Hello, I am planning to travel Auli in december, m basically interested in Skiing, may i have some information abt that & also i will starting from MUmbai, how can i reach Auli from Mumbai.
HI Rohit,

Best time to visit Auli is from December to March. For the adventurers Auli is at its best in winters. The snow on the steep slopes makes the spectacular ground for skiing. In case you plan your visit to Auli between December and March then you may check out the ski courses conducted by Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam. These courses are conducted for both amateurs and advanced learners.

The nearest railhead from Auli is at Haridwar (approx 300kms). Several important trains link Haridwar to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Allahabad and so on.

Thank you.

2 AbhayS what is the best mode of tranportation according to u shld be taken to reach Auli frm Delhi.
Hey AbhayS,

The nearest Railway Station is Rishikesh / Haridwar which is directly connected from Delhi by Shatabdi Exp.

If you can afford than the nearest airport is Jolly Grant near Dehradun (268 Km). Indian Airlines regulates flights from Delhi. Kingfisher flies twice daily at around 10:15 aur 11:40 (1 Hr flight).

Although Auli is located in remote of the Garhwal Himalayas, a good network of roads cover the place. In fact the beast idea to reach Auli is by road from Joshimath from where Auli is only 13ksm drive. Other prominent cities in Uttaranchal and north India, such as: Rishikesh (253kms), Haridwar (277kms), Dehradun (298kms) and Delhi (500kms) lie in proximity to Auli and connected by drivable roads.

If you want to drive on your own and not aware of the routes than pls let me know i will further help you in informing the driving directions.

2 kumar28 i m planning my honeymoon in auli. is auli right choice for honeymoon. if so is there any honeymoon package for it. i m planning a 1 week honeymoon. what other options can i include in my itinerary. Auli is the perfect place for honeymooners. The best part of Auli is that its not so prefered destination, so there is not much crowd and it still retains its virgin beauty. Auli is not sought after because its not so much popularised as Shimla or manali. Its take about 15hrs to reach auli from delhi. it doesnt have many resorts. and the resorts are costilier. There is only one awesomw resort, Clifftop Club Resort. Clifftop Club at Auli is located at an altitude of over 10,000 feet in India's most scenic location amid the snow clad Himalayas. Its the world's second higest ski resort. The resort provides a 270 degree clear view of the snow covered Nanda Devi range (the highest in india and third highest in the world). Other ranges in sight include Dronagiri, Kamet, Trishul, Neelkanth, Mana, and Mukut . They belong to the snow-line ranges which are covered with snow all round the year. Clifftop Club has been built on inhospitable terrain over years of painstaking labour incorporating traditional and innovative techniques. Those who brave the drive to the resort are rewarded with a magnificent sight as the resort rises into view from the steep path that leads up to it from Joshimath. For those who prefer to zip up in the cable car, the resort seems like a tiny speck in the vast snow or grass covered expanse of the Himalayas, as the season may be. The warm hospitality however belies the tough weather conditions under which the CTC staff battle the forces of nature to provide comfort to the guests. The resort is paradise in winters for skiing and sledding enthusiasts and for anyone who wishes to venture out in the snow and enjoy snow sports. In summers, when the snow gives way to carpets of grass and flowers, hikers and trekkers will find numerous marked walks and mountain bike trails. Trekkers to Kuari Pass and the Valley of Flowers prefer to stay on at Clifftop Club at the end of the trek to avail the luxury of hot baths and lavish cuisine. The famous high altitude Gorson Reserve forest (part of the Nanda Devi National Park) provides a splendid backdrop to the resort. The forest is richly inhabited by rare Himalayan wildlife including the snow leopard, musk deer, wild boar, wild cats, rabbits, jackals, foxes, hyena and black bear. Summers are extremely pleasant and the deodar and oak trees add to the fragrant air to promote natural health, which is strongly recommended by Physicians/ Naturopaths/ Therapists. The road from Joshimath to Clifftop Club (17 km) is a steep climb from about 5000 feet to 10,000 feet above sea level. The steep gradient coupled with ice on the road makes it unfit for vehicles other than a sturdy four-wheel drive during winters. The road is motorable up to the doorstep of the resort at other times of the year. In winters (from December end till mid March) the motor road from Joshimath to Auli is not operational due to heavy snowfall. Cable car is the only mode of transportation from Joshimath to Auli. The last trip of the cable car to the resort leaves Joshimath at 4:20 pm during winters and 5:30 pm during summers. Tourists must reach Joshimath before the last trip of cable car. Tourists reaching late may have tostay in Joshimath overnight at their own expense. Guests visiting Clifftop Club have to alight at tower number eight of the cable car. Tower number eight is a high tower and the elderly may find it difficult to use the stairs and walk down to the resort in snow. Visitors are also kindly advised to be careful with small children while getting down or climbing up the tower. The road to Clifftop Club is a difficult hill track. Guests who drive up to Joshimath can also leave their vehicles in the parking area at the Rope way Park at Joshimath and travel to Clifftop Club by ropeway to tower number eight with their luggage. The ropeway is Asia's highest and second largest, and charges (Rs. 400/- per person for a round trip). The other alternative is to travel by road from Joshimath to Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam's Tourist Reception Center at Auli (14 km). The exciting and fun filled chair lift ride from there to Clifftop Club costs Rs. 100/= per person for a round trip. Members can hire a Jeep/Sumo from Joshimath to reach Clifftop Club which roughly costs Rs. 800 (eight hundred only). Honeymoon Package for a couple for 3 nights/4 days will cost you about Rs 15999/- Inclusion will be Room Tariff + All Meals (Bed Tea, Breakfast, Lunch, Evening Tea and Dinner) + Taxes, Complimentary skiing for one session subject to adequate snowfall, sight seeing For booking you can call Sumit at 09910443540
