Rameswaram Jyotirlinga

Arulmigu Ramanatha swami Thirukkovil has an ancient Shiva Linga made by the wife of Lord Rama, goddess Sita. As the timings of performing the religious ceremony were already planned, both Lord Rama and goddess Sita waited desperately for Lord Hanuman to return with Shiva Linga from Himalayas. But when Lord Hanuman didn’t return on time, goddess decided to make Shiva Linga by her own hands. When Lord Hanuman returned carrying the Shiva Linga from Himalayas most part of the prayers had already been performed. In anger when he tried to remove the Shiva Linga with his tail, he remained unsuccessful. On seeing this, Lord Rama blessed Hanuman that before offering prayers to the Shivalinga built by his wife--goddess Sita, people would have to first pay cognizance to the Shiva Linga brought by him. The prayers offered by Lord Rama were aimed to relinquish himself from the ‘Brahma Dosha’ of killing a Brahmin(Raavana). Millions of pilgrims visit this shrine every day. During the season of Maha Shivratri special arrangements are also made for the pilgrims.

The Viswa-Linga installed by the Lord Hanuman on the other side of Rameswaram temple is a must visit temple.

2 ShamimBhai We have only one day time with us suggest selected plces which we must see in near to rameswaram temple.
Dear Shamim,

Thanks for your query in Kiomoi,

Sacred Places outside the Temple

Gandamadhana Parvata

About 2.5 km west of the temple, on a hillock, stands the Gandamadhana Parvata. It is situated on the highest point in the island. In this Mandapa footprints of Sri Rama are enshrined. From the top of the Mandapa there is a fine view of parts of the island.

Tiruppullani

Outside the island, there are three other sites traditionally connected with Sri Rama's expedition to Sri Lanka. A big temple in Tiruppullani commemorates the tradition that there the Lord obtained a bow and arrows to use in the impending war from its presiding Deity and also that the Lord of the Ocean who had refused to help Him finally submitted.

Agnitheertham

100 metres away from the temple is Agnitheertham, where Rama worshipped Lord Shiva, to cleanse away the sin of killing Ravana.

Sethu

5 km south of the temple is Sethu, where there is a celebrated temple of Sri Anjaneya, and where, tradition holds, Sri Rama built a bridge to Sri Lanka. In Devipatnam, or Navapashanam, also by the sea, there are nine stones visible at low tide. It is believed that they were set up by Sri Rama to represent the nine planets, the Navagrahas.

Uttarakosamangai

16 km southwest of Ramanathapuram stands the renowed Shiva temple of Uttarakosamangai. Manikkavachagar has sung of it. The Lord is Mangaleshvara and the Goddess Mangalesvari. The temple has inspired many Tamil works of devotion. So, of course, has the Ramanatha temple in Rameshwaram.

Kothandaraswamy Temple & Dhanushkodi

Twelve km from town, this temple was the only structure to survive the 1964 cyclone which washed the rest of the village away. Legend states that Vibishana, brother of Sita's kidnapper Ravana, surrendered to Rama at this spot.

Adam's Bridge

Adam's Bridge is the name given to the chain of reefs, sandbanks and islets that almost connects Sri Lanka with India. According to legend, this is the series of stepping stones used by Hanuman to follow Ravana, in his bid to rescue Sita.

Rameshwaram Beach

The serene beach and shallow water here are ideal for swimming and sunbathing. This is the only place in the region where one could swim in the sea day and night. An enjoyable sight is frolic of dolphins in the water. A leisurely drive along the Dhanushkodi road is a pleasant experience. The clear sea, backwater edged with waving bulrushes, surrounds the road. Stretches of virtually untouched beach sparkle in the fading light and it is from here that you get a spectacular view of the sunset.

Around Rameswaram

Ramanathapuram (55 Km)

The district headquarters and an ancient town, Ramanathapuram, is worth visiting for its Ram Vilas Palace. This palace of the Sethupati Rajas, houses oil portraits of the Rajas, of the past centuries. Ceilings and walls are decorated with early eighteenth century murals, depicting subjects such as business meetings with the English, and battles with the Maratha Sarabhoji, as well as scenes from epics. The tomb of Thayumana Swamigal, a philosopher-saint, are worth visiting.

Tirupullani (64km)

Also known as Dharbasayanam, the Vishnu temple at Tirupullani, is dedicated to Lord Adi Jagannatha Perumal. The annual 'Arudhra' festival in December is a popular one.

Uthirakosamangai (72 Km)

Uthirakosamangai is an ancient Saivaite pilgrimage centre. The deity here is carved out of Emerald. The annual 'Arudhra' festival in December, attracts a large number of tourists.

Erwadi (80km)

An important site for Muslim pilgrims, Erwadi houses the tomb of Ibrahim Sahid Aulia. The annual festival in honour of this saint, takes place in December.

Kurusudai island (23 km)

This and a number of other islands are situated to the west of the Pamban bridge. It is a paradise for biologists and is now declared as a national marine eco centre.

Kanchirankulam (105km)

It is a water bird sanctuary. Season runs from November to February.

Good Day !!!

2 Sumanbakshi can pls provide the details of the trains & their timings from New Delhi to rameswaram.
There is no direct train from Delhi To Rameshwaram. Come to Chennai. There are two direct trains from Chennai. Have a nice journey. Hotels such as Hotel Hare Rama Hare Krishna and Hotel Royal Park would be good ones to stay.

2 prem10 i will be in Rameswaram for just 15hrs, so pls tell me what all are the places which i can cover n ths much of time. I want to cover maximum places.
Hi,

The Ramanathaswamy temple is renowned for its magnificent corridors and massive sculptured pillars. The third corridor of Ramanathaswamy temple is the longest one in the world.

Besides pilgrimage, Rameswaram Island has several places which ideally suites for picnic programmes. There are beautiful beaches at Olaikuda, Dhanushkodi and Pamban. Olaikuda beach ( 1 km ) from the main temple is engulfed by coral reefs which makes sea bathing safe and enjoyable.

Places to see are:-

Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge ( 12 kms ):- Also known as Pamban Bridge which connects the Rameswaram island with the main land. It is the longest Sea bridge in India lengths nearly 2.2 kms.

Kodandaramar Temple ( 10 kms ):- Kodandaramar Temple, on the way Dhanushkodi, is considered to be the place where Sri Rama performed the cornation for Vibhishana, Younger brother of Demon King, Ravana after he sought asylum . The idols of Rama with bow & arrow along with Sita, Lakshmana, Vibhishana and Hanuman is worthseeing and delightful to watch.

Nambu Nayagi Amman Temple:- It is a temple of high regard for the people of Ramnad District , situated at 8 kms from Rameswaram main temple on the way to Dhanushkodi.

Five Faced Hanuman Temple:- Situated 2 kms from the main temple, the deity of Hanuman brought with sendooram. Floating stone, used to built Sethu Bandanam ( Bridge between India and Lanka ) in this temple was Worth seeing.

Sri. Ramanathaswamy Temple :- Sri Ramanathaswamy temple which is situated near to the sea on the eastern side of the island is renowned for its magnificient corridors with massive sculptured pollars lining it . The corridor is the longest in the world.Pooja is being performed to Spadikalingam ( Mani Dharshan ) which was given by the Saint Sankarachrya to this temple, for an hour early morning daily.

Sukreevar Temple/ Theertham:- Situated on the way to Gandamadana Parvatham near Doordarshan Kendra.

Have Fun!!!!
