Getaways

Corbett Getaways & Excursions

Strategically located in the Himalayan foothills, Corbett National Park is a stone throw away from other Himalayan destinations, which make an easy getaway to be explored. Many of these tourist’s hits such as Nainital, Ranikhet, and Lansdowne have captured attention, unfailingly. And others such as Sitabani, Rampur etc., located in the neck of the National Sanctuary, have started experiencing tourist’s influx during recent months. Located at 14 kms from Ramnagar, enroute Ranikhet, Garjiya is a small boondock named after "Garjiya Devi Temple". The temple here is sacred place of pilgrimage or devi ka mandir (temple of Goddess) built over a mammoth rock in the centre of Kosi River. A unique belief of the locals residing here is that the temple never submerges even during heavy floods, and is supposed to have existed for years without being effected. The sanctum sanctorum showcases its best during Kartik Poornima Fair, held once a year.

With an area of 521 sq km and more than 75-year-old history, Corbett National Park is India’s wild pride. Having celebrated its diamond jubilee recently, Corbett is considered as a ‘jewel in the crown’ of India. Established in the year 1936, Corbett National Park is an awesome sanctuary which has Ram Ganga River along the upper Ganges as its core and Himalayan Mountain as its backdrop. Located in Nainital district of Uttrakhand, the park is mammoth reservoir of endangered Bengal tiger and part of Patlidun Valley. Better known as “Corbett National Park & Tiger Reserve”, the main target is preserving royal tigers of Bengal. Spanning across a huge area, the park shelters many endangered species: 50 mammal species, 549 bird species and 26 reptile species. Amidst these treasured charms of hariyali (greenery) and dense jungles, Corbett displays a unique allure of being India’s first and foremost National Park.

Flora and Fauna History

Since its establishment in 1936, the park has changed several names before finally taking its honour as Corbett National Park. Initially the park was named as Hailey National Park, covering not-so-wide areas of 323.75 sq km, followed by another renaming as Ramganga National Park in the year 1954–55 and finally as Corbett National Park in 1955-56 by the angrezs (British).

Corbett Tiger Reserve has an area of 1300 sq kms covering forest, hills and grassland that are fed by frisky river. It has a biodiversity that is rich and rare. The ambience is a simple retreat for city dwellers and wildlife lovers, far away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Corbett is, in fact, a large valley with a long axis from east to west, with an elevation ranging from 400 meters to 1210, meters. The park teems with 110 species of trees, 51 shrubs, 27 of climbers, 37 grasses and bamboos. Some of the prime plantations that catches one’s attention are haldu adina cardifolia, pipal ficus religiosa, rohini mallotus philipensis and mango mangifera indica are also commonly found. Sheesham dalbergia sissoo is found along the Ramganga River.

Other common and trees of important uses are rohini, mainly converted to vermillion or sindoor, used by women on their foreheads. Kattha, which is used for chewing with beetle (paan) in India, is also found here. This is good herb used for mouth infection. Bel, a hard-shelled fruit grows quiet wild here. Trees like amla and sanjana are also found growing abundantly in the jungle riches. The park is noticeable for its sal, bakli, khweta, pula, dhauri, bhilawa, ber, papri, kumbhi, mahwa, trichoniya, rohni and jamun.

Flora & Fauna - Wildlife

The silence of jungles, flora and highly favorable climate spells magic on wildlife species in Corbett, for Corbett is kneaded with innumerable wildlife species. Presently, 549 species of birds, 26 reptile species, 50 mammal species, and 7 species of amphibians are housed in the sanctuary. Besides the regular species found in the dense jungles, there are many species like: elephants, tigers chitals, sambars, hog deer and barking deer, crocodiles, gharials, monitor lizards, wild boars and jackals. Also found are nocturnals like: leopard cat, jungle cat, fishing cat and sloth bear, Himalayan black bear. Some of the small resident of the park are dhole, Himalayan palm civet, Indian gray mongoose, common otter, black napped hare and porcupine. •
  • Dhikala Tourist Complex Restaurant: This is a wonderful restaurant offering variety of dishes along with couple of Chinese dishes. The restaurant is little expensive than others in Corbett.
  •
  • Gairal Forest Rest House: The canteen is recently constructed and the specialty of this canteen is "poori bhaji". It is a great help for people staying in Gairal Forest House as they can get food easily. The menu is quite similar to that of the Dhikala restaurant.
  •

Ramnagar Restaurants

Ramnagar is a small time place and doesn’t offer much to its visitors in respect to mouthwatering dishes. The restaurants in Ramnagar are plebian and serve standard Butter-Chicken-Biryani-Shahi-Paneer within a fare price range. The best places to try would be hotels where one is staying and places around it. Besides, the best two picks are Gol Ghar (multi cuisine) at the Infinity Resort and Jim`s Grill House (Continental) at the Corbett Hideaway.

Buffer Zone

Corbett Tiger Reserves covers a colossal area of 1318.54 sq km in total, and is segregated in two parts: the Core area (520.82 sq km) and Buffer Area (792 sq km). Corbett Buffer Zone spans from reserves forests and Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary and constitutes 19 villages in all. Unlike reserve area, it is the lesser known delights, alongside Main Park, underlined with an official title—the Buffer Zone. Interestingly, unlike the main park Buffer Zone area only two modes of transport—four legged (elephant safari) and another four wheeled (jeep) are allowed—the buffer zone allows only walking. This surrounding area to the park can be strolled on foot `unencumbered`. Not to be missed, the buffer zone is loaded with nature`s wonders, and borders the main attraction of the park. Of all the major avian species found in Corbett and areas abutting Corbett, the buffer zone shelters around 600 species of birds, most of which are migratory birds. Sprawling with vast acres of wilderness, dotted with villages and sunrays filtering amidst the tall sal woods, it is truly a magical to go a walk on the lanes here. And, there is no better way to bird watching than this.

One of the gateways to Corbett National Park, Dhikala happens to be a tempting attraction at Corbett, just at 40 kms North West of Ramnagar. Situated on the edge of Patlidun Valley, Dhikala is punctuated by the concurrence of Ramganga River channels and is known to be the largest and most popular grassland of the park. Claoked with vast grassland, it proves to be a great spot for wildlife viewing. To top the beauty strokes at Dhikala, the Kanda ridges provides breathtaking backdrop here. To have an awesome view of the place one can watch it from the watchtower near Dhikala.

It can be accessed through Dhangarhi Gate and is not open to those who have a permit to stay overnight in one of the Forest Rest Houses. The Tourist Complex overlooks Dhikala Chaur (one of the largest remaining grasslands of the Park) and Phulai Chaur. A walk or drive through these trails makes you see some of the prized wildlife possessions like elephants, chital, hog deer and numerous grassland bird species and raptors. All seen and done you can’t ignore the beauty of old Forest Rest House, constructed by Britishers long, long ago.

Bijrani

An excellent hunting ground of the erstwhile British rulers, Bijrani is another place which permits day visits. Its landscape comprises dry forest vegetation with diverse flora and fauna species. The area falling under Bijrani is inundated with pocket-sized water bodies generally referred to as Tal- a Hindi version for streams and water bodies. Dotted with Mailani Tal and Phul Tal and many seasonal ponds like Kithcher Sot, Reethapani Sot, Khina Sot & Malani Sot, Bijrani attracts lot of wildlife residents like sambar, deer, chital, para, barking deer, India python, viper, cobra, krait and the dreaded king cobra and various type of lizards. Alongside, it throws chances to spot tigers, elephants. Drawn in by sweet nectar of Mahua flowers, the sloth bears and normal bears are often found in an intoxicated state after they consume Mahua. Nature Beckons!!!

Jhirna

Commonly known for its Forest Rest House, Jhirna is extensive grassland with much drier vegetation than that found in Bijrani. The whole of Jhirna can be accessed from Amanda gate and if you intend to find the Forest Rest House, located within, you must proceed on the southern boundary of the park, on the road from Ramnagar to Kalagarh that spans through east west direction of the park. In much similar pulse to Bijrani, Jhirna too is decked with perennial and seasonal sots and gorges running across it. Watching toward the north of Jhirna tourists can find picturesque scene of thick bamboo plantations. There are quiet bright chances to spot leopards, tigers, sambar and other mammals too. Jhirna treasures flocks of avifauna species seen mostly in the evenings.

Crocodile Pool

A vast pool of clean fresh water, Crocodile Pool is a breeding area of crocs and many other reptile species. It happens to fall en route the elephant safari path and is a must-see place for wildlife enthusiasts. It is situated on the short cut path from Gairal to other Rest House on the west of the pool. The view is appealing with balcony like natural construction to it, which provides elevated look to the pool inhabited by the crocodiles. The sight of crocodiles lying by the pool and inside the water is both attention capturing and scary! One can easily spot male member because of its giant size. Some claim he is almost 18 feet from the tip of his snout to the tip of his tail. The pool also has many muggers, Mahseer carps and giant catfishes. The area near the stream and closer to upstream is inhabited by small fishes. Also, if lucky enough you can spot the happy-go-lucky elephants cooling off in the water. Be ware of not playing or nearing the water as crocs are very receptive to their baits above water.

Gettheryo

Gettheryo is a name of the riverbed located toward the west of Khinnanauli nearing Sambar Trail. To reach to Gettheryo you must take right of the forked path that comes 200 yards off the Sambar Trail. It is a huge stretch of dry land and rocky riverbed, inundated by seasonal stream water throughout. There is a high possibility for seeing tigers and elephants here. Often, one can spot herd and pack of animals drinking water near by. Sitting on the bank of stream and near by water body zero in chances of viewing animals and beautiful locale decked with many twisting streams and elongated islands of Khair Sissoo trees.

Dhangarhi Museum

Located at Dhangarhi, the museum at Dhangarhi is a good stoppage for watching one-time wildlife species. The museum has glass boxes containing head of tigers and elephants, killed in fight long back.

Note: Entry Fee is Rs 5 for Indians and Rs 10 for foreigners. Children below 5 are exempted from paying the fee and children in the age group of 5-12 years are charged a nominal fee of Rs 1. Photography is permitted in the museum without any extra charge.

Kaladhungi Museum

Placed at a distance of 3 km after Kaladhungi town toward Nainital, opposite to the crossroad from where the road moves to Nainital via Khurptal, the Kaladhungi Museum is a place worth visiting. A hunt for historians, backpackers and travelers, Kaladhungi Museum is also Jim Corbett’s winter retreat displaying personal articles, paintings, sketches, manuscripts and last hunt of its owner. The whole of museum is historical site that lends an insight into Jim Corbett’s life and era he lived in.

The bungalow is of lime mortar colour and has preserved many personal items such as original manuscripts artifacts, palanquin (doli) and letters written by Corbett. The edifice was converted and declared as museum by Forest Department of India in 1967 and thereon is considered as a Government property. Interestingly, one can find a souvenir (Mothi Souvenir) shop attached to the museum; it has a dial up internet facility.

Note: Entry Fee is Rs 5 for Indians and Rs 10 for foreigners. Children below 5 are exempted from paying the fee and children in the age group of 5-12 years are charged a nominal fee of Rs 1. The visiting time is 7.00 am – 6.00 pm and the museum remains closed on Sunday. The kaladhungi museum observes no holidays except that of Holi, in the month of March. The best time to visit is the months of January through March. Photography is permitted in the museum without any extra charge.

Corbett Falls

Go ahead 3 kms from kaladhungi and you will be welcome by nature’s sound of water. Yes, you are at Corbett Falls. Visiting the fall might put your idea of Kempty Fall on stake as it is much entice than Kempty Falls of Mussoorie. The cool clear water cascading from a height is a beauty worth admiring. Above all, the passage that leads you to the Fall will mesmerize you much before you reach there. The 1.7 kms long path with chirping and flights of birds send you a clarion call for a heaven ahead. Corbett Fall is undoubtedly beautiful; rustling leaves and killing silence definitely charm every visitor here.

Note: Entry Fees is Rs 5.00 for Indians and Rs 10 for foreigners. Photography is allowed free of cost. Bathing is permitted but be careful of slippery-moss-gathered stones as they might make you slip.

2 Shanuu Can the Tiger attack the Tourists? <p>Hi Shanuu,</p> <p>As far as safety is concerned than i think you should not worry about it as there will be Professional guides with you. The Tigers generally rest in shade during day time. There are several options for tiger viewing like jeep safari, jungle safari, elephant safari which helps to spot tiger, increasingly not by chance these days. You just need to follow the Guide instructions while spotting a tiger.</p> <p>Enjoy...</p>

The duration is three to four hours and timings are during early morning and afternoon till sunset.</p> <p>Canter Safari is conducted twice a day, first at 06:00 hrs during the wee hours of morning and other at 12:00 hrs during the noon time. Each of the Canter Safari is conducted for 4 hours and in a 16-seater-closed-canter that sets off at Dhikala in the Tiger Reserve area. It should be booked in advance.</p> <p>Elephant rides are available at Dhikala, Bijrani, Jhirna and Khinnannauli Forest Rest Houses and must be booked with the authority in advance. The time taken is 2 hrs approximate and fee is Rs 150 to 200.</p> <p>Tigers and elephants being the prime attraction at Corbett, hordes of tourists come to spot them every year.</p> <p>Thanks</p>

2 bhuvnesh perfect time to visit <p>Dear Bhuvnesh,</p> <p>Corbett can be accessed during every season except when the park is officially closed down for tourist. The visitors and tourists can choose their months to visit the park accordingly. Precisely, Corbett can be seen at its full swing during months of November to February and March to June. Summers are best to view larger animals, and winter brings in with itself large avifauna species. All photography buffs can pay a visit during April to June, just to come back with some of the best snaps. Although the park is closed during monsoon, the buffer zone remains open. A trip to the park during monsoons would leave you with a memorable travelogue!</p> <p>Closed: June 15-November 15</p>

2 knt hi sir, i want to visit corbett park for a day with my family.i will come in early morning from ranikhet in my car and want to go back in the same evening,i have already seen the famous garjia temple Dear, There are two possible safari visits you can do. First Safari visit starts at 6:45 in the morning and finish at 9:45. So if you like to do this visit you have to be here in Corbett in early morning. Second Safari visit starts at 1330hrs and finish at 1700hrs and I don't think you would like to drive in Hill at night. So its so tough to take a safari if you starts from Ranikhet same day. Its advised to stay atleast one night in Corbett to take safari easily. For morning safari you can book in advance and for afternoon you can book on same day. Its advised to book well in advance because its a big rush in Corbett round the year. For bookings you can contact kiomoi.com. They will make the bookings well in advance. 2 shank i am planning to visit corbett suggest me something Hi Shank, The season for Corbett is ongoing. Corbett National Park is full of surprises where you can make selection out of elephant, jeep and canter safari. Additionally, depending upon the resorts you make your stay in you can opt for horse and cycle safari too. Otherwise, as per your duration of the stay do indulge in activities like fishing /angling (with permissions), rafting and short treks arranged by the resort authorities. Well, never miss out two illustrious activities: angling/fishing (with permission only) and bird watching. These activities can be managed within a day or two. In case you have Forest Rest House (accommodations inside the Park) in mind, get them booked 10 days in advance with the park authority. If you are looking for more than do visit http://www.kiomoi.com/travel-guide /corbett/overview-5-0.htm. Have a happy journey!!!

2 prabu hi can u tell about the accomodations at dhikala as it is the core area for 2days and 1 night Hi Prabu, Following are the details:- 1. Dhikala Forest Rest House/ Complex:- No. of rooms: 30 rooms and 24 bunks. Location: On the bank of Ramganga River Specialty: Only place where you can get a punctured repaired here by a part time mahout or elephant jockey. Dhikala Forest Rest House is the largest accommodation facility in Corbett Park, India. 2. Bijrani Forest Rest House/ Complex:-Location: Southern Ridge of the Park, A simple and appealing edifice of old times, Bijrani Forest Rest House has its own restaurant and canteens. The rest house is similar to that of Dhikala Forest House. There is an additional facility of elephants ride to the surrounding area here. 3. Kanda Forest Rest House/ Complex:- In close vicinity of Dhikala Forest House The most interesting part is the drive to the park where there are lots of scopes to spot leopards. 2 sunilbindal Hi, I want to come to corbett. I want to come from nainital in the morning and have to left corbett the very same day by the evening to reach delhi. Is is possible. What to see at corbett and what ar Hi! It is not easy to complete the corbett tour in 1 day. You need atlest two days to cover all the places in Corbett. Places to see:- Garjia Temple:- Garjia Temple, Corbett Wild Tour14 kms. from Ramnagar,on the way to Ranikhet, is a huge rock in the midst of river Kosi. This place has been named Garjia Devi after the deity. The temple is visited by thousands of devotees from different parts of the state. Bijrani:- This area is the one besides Jhirna & Lohachaur where day visits are allowed. Besides Tiger, one can see here interesting Bird life & Wild Elephants. Mailani Tal and Phul Tal located in the Bijrani Range are stagnant water bodies. Besides there are no. of seasonal water streams popularly called sot like Kithcer Sot, Reethapani Sot, Khina Sot & Malani Sot. Dhikala is the most well known of the destinations in Corbett.Dhikala offers an awesome uninterrupted panoramic view of the valley, with the Kanda ridge in the backdrop. This sight appears all the more imposing from the watchtower near Dhikala. Jhirna:- This rest house lies just inside the southern boundary of the Park. The rest house lies on the road from Ramnagar to Kalagarh that runs in an east-west direction through the Park. Jungle Safari:- A jeep safari will take you through the foothills of Kumaon with ravines and valleys, amidst the thick cover of trees with dappled sunlight and a profound silence broken only by bird calls. Spot water holes and pug marks, trees scratched by male tigers to mark their territory and an astounding variety of mammals, birds and vegetation. By Road - Buses depart regularly from Ramnagar to Delhi, between 5 am and 8 pm each day. The ticket cost is around Rs100/- to Rs150/-. No deluxe buses are available. Most people prefer to drive down to The Claridges Corbett Hideaway. It takes approximately six hours from Delhi to cover the 260-km stretch dotted with petrol pumps and dhabas. The road is reasonably good, though it is best not to travel during the monsoons. The route takes you through Gajraula (you must sample a thali at the Bhajan Dhaba here), Moradabad, Kashipur and Ramnagar. Thanks! Shankey

2 Karan which places can i visit in corbett park in 1 day, where i should stay, what about Room Cottege in corebett camp, what about corbett fall n jeep safari Hi! Accommodation is not a problem in Corbett. There are many standard hotels, which provide good services to their guests. As Corbett is quite popular destination during the tourist season, it is better to get reservation before reaching there. Places to see in corbett:- 1. Dhikala is the most well known of the popular tourist destinations in Corbett. It is located at the edge of the broad Patli Dun valley through which the Ramganga flows in numerous channels. This sight appears all the more imposing from the watchtower near Dhikala. The Tourist Complex overlooks Dhikala chaur (one of the largest remaining grasslands of the Park) and Phulai chaur. 2. Garjia Temple: 14 kms. from Ramnagar,on the way to Ranikhet, is a huge rock in the midst of river Kosi. This place has been named Garjia Devi after the deity. 3.Bijrani: The area in and around Bijrani once for med part of a shooting block. 4. Jhirna:- This rest house lies just inside the southern boundary of the Park. The rest house lies on the road from Ramnagar to Kalagarh that runs in an east-west direction through the Park. The landscape is drier than in Dhikala and vegetation is mostly scrub. 5.Corbett Museum at Dhangarhi where you will see the belonging and life history of Mr. Jim Corbett still intact at the museum with some of the animals at corbett national park. Jeep Safari in Corbett National Park will enthrall you by giving you a chance to view the animals in their natural habitat. You may take jeeps on rent from the Tourist Lodge of KMVN, from Ramnagar or you better contact kiomoi.com. You may chance upon a wide range of fauna like the Jungle Cat, Leopard Cat, Fishing Cat, Sloth Bear, Crocodile, Goat Antelopes, Rhesus Monkeys and Langurs, to mention a few. Though tiger-sightings are few, you may get a glimpse of the beast if your stars favor you. Otherwise, you have to stay contented by seeing only the fresh pug marks. The Jeep Safari will enable you to have a quick look at a section of the wide range of 50 species of mammals, 110 species of trees, 25 species of reptiles and 580 species of birds, housed in this park. 2 sushil dear sir, our group want to visit one day safari of jim corbett park... we will arive from delhi, on 14-june-08.(or near to it). is it possible to make one day tour. what should we do to book je Well, to book jeep-safari, u have to either visit govt. offices in person (special offices for this purpose), but it may consume time and money as they need several proofs and it may be possible that u don't get same-day safari.. So better option is to book a hotel first (good-one) and then leave it to hotel to arrange this safari for u solely (min. 4 persons, Rs.1600, may change) but u need to tell this while booking hotel. for booking contact kiomoi.com @ 0120-4666444,4666401 as early as possible and we will inform u of all details after confirmation.
