Hi Sanjay,
It will be warm. And if you are lucky it might rain. Misty Meadows is in south Coorg, close to some beautiful parts of Coorg. You could do a lot of trekking (close to Bramagiri hills) and also visit Nargarhole National Park. You could take a taxi from Medikeri or Virajpet. Get ready to do a lot of walking!

Hi Tauseef,
The climate of Coorg is very pleasant and can be visited during any time of the year. But the most ideal time to visit Coorg is between September and March.
Thanks!
Hi Dinen,
Local autos and taxis are available on hire for sightseeing and moving around. Jeeps are one of cheaper and suggested means of transportation as Coorg has bumpy road. Autos are expensive and do not leave you at the tourist spot while jeep. On the other hand, jeeps are more preferred and easy mode of transportation because of the bad roads here.
A pleasant place for all seasons, Coorg is an addiction! March makes the most ideal time to visit Coorg. Madikeri can also be seen in its full blossom during monsoon. ThatÂ’s why this season is called as On Season for visiting Madikeri. Summers are affordable with a max of 25 -30 degrees centigrade. Although pleasant throughout, but during the rainy season it can be worst with high humidity level.
Enjoy!!
Hi anin,
If you are lucky it might rain or be overcast. Taxis are comfortable since the distances are short.
Places to see: Bhagamandala, Talakaveri, Bramagiri Hills, Bylakuppe (Tibetan Settlement) Dubare, Elephant Camp, Nararahole National Park, Irup & Abbi Falls, etc.

Dear Dalalmukund,
Thanks for your query in Kiomoi,
Yes you can visit coorg in july month,
Good Day !!!
Dear Bhadresh,
There are lots of places you could visit:
Hi,
Coorg enjoys a moderate climate. Summers are only slightly warm at 25-35 degrees Celsius. Coffee blossoms fill the air with an exhilarating fragrance in March-April. During May the cool and pure waters of the Cauvery are ideal for bathing in at the Dubare forest or Nisarga Dhama or for enjoying a dip near the Iruppu or Abbi Falls.
Coorg/Madikeri has no option for local transportation in particular, unlike other metropolitan cities. TouristsÂ’ and first-time-visitors will have to arrange the conveyance themselves if they wish to see the city on their own. Some of the local means of commuting constitutes private/state run buses, autos and jeeps.
I hope the above information is useful.

Dear Sir,
Thanks for your query,Omkaraeshwara Temple:- During his reign, the Haleri king Lingaraja-II beheaded a brahmin who a minister in his court. After his death, the Brahmin is said to have haunted the king as 'Brahmarakshas'. As a remedial measure the king was advised to bring shivalinga from Kashi and install it in Madikeri. The king arranged for it and thus came up the Omkareshwara Temple in 1820. The temple is a quaint mix of Islamic and Gothic styles of architecture. The gold leaf inscription atop is accessed through a narrow flight of interesting steps used by the then king to survey his kingdom.
Madikeri Fort:- Built on high grounds with a unique blend of traditional and modern styles of architecture, the Madikeri Fort looms large over the town. Built during the reign of the Haleri kings, it was rebuilt in the early 19th century.
Built in European style, the palace is said to have secret underground routes. As a mark of regret for the brutal killing of the royal elephant by king Veerraja, stone replicas of two mighty elephants are erected to the left of the palace.
Gaddige:- Touching the skyline stand the Gadduge or three tombs with domes in Islamic style and minarets with gold coating built in Indo Sarsenic style. The central tomb, larger and more ornate than the other two on its either sides is a memorial on the greaves of Virarajendra and his wife Mahadevi Amma. The other two are the graves of Lingarajendra and of Rudrappa, Guru to Virarajendra. Situated on an elevated plane, the place offers a bird's eye view of Madikeri.
Abbi Falls:- A thrilling 8 kms drive amid forests and coffee plantations takes one to the most popular picnic spot the Abbifalls. The gush and the grandeur of the waters splashing down from 70ft can be witnessed from the hanging bridge. Although the crystal clear waters are inviting, bathing and swimming in the deep waters is unsafe. Heavy vehicles cannot ply the narrow road leading to the falls and therefore jeeps and Auto Rickshaws come in very handy.
Golden Temple:- A recently built “Namdrolling Monastry” a world famous Tibetan Golden Temple a toast to the eyes in Bylukuppe. The Golden Temple adorned with a 60 ft Buddha statue and the recent addition of Zamdong Palri the copper coloured mountain is an exotic tourist attraction. Fascinating shopping marts selling ethnic Tibetan artefacts and modern fashion wares - is the place to be visited. Also it is the second largest Tibetan settlement in India.
Nisarga Dhama:- As island surrounded by the Cauvery river, Nisaragadhama is a picturesque picnic spot offering a true "Woody" experience amidst a bamboo forest with a hanging bridge, boat rides, elephant rides, tree-top shelter, deer park etc.,
Harangi Dam:- A dam with a length of 2775 ft and a height of 174 ft is built across the tributary of Cauvery. This reservoir, 8 kms from Nisargadhama on one side and 6kms from Kushalnagar on the other, is the only reservoir in Coorg. A true picnic spot where one can admire the gushing back waters and a Cauvery temple nearby. A visit to the Kudige Dairy farm close by could be interesting.
Dubare Elephant Camp:- Just about 15 kms from Kushalnagar is Natural Island with approximately 11 acres of land. The island has a wonderful wreath of water and trees around. The cool and gurgling waters of the river offer a pleasant and refreshing view. The Dubare Forest area is maintained by the forest department that runs an Elephant Training Camp here. People visiting the place enjoy the unusual experience of watching the routine of 12 tamed elephants, their herd-behavior, their intake of enormous 'raagi' balls made specially for them by mahouts etc.,
Bhagamandala:- Bhagamandala is a shrine of Bhagandeshwara. The temple got its name by Bhaganda Maharshi who installed the Shivalinga here. Well known as 'Dakshina Kashi', the main shrine has by its side, the temple of Maha Vishnu, Subrahmanya and Ganapathi.
Talakaveri:- The worshipping deity of Coorg and the lifeline of peninsular India, River Cauvery takes her origin as a spring in Talacauvery, one of the most prominent pilgrim centers of Karnataka. About 48kms from Madikeri at the foot of 'Brahmagiri Hills' in Talacauvery is the holy pond where on auspicious day of 'Tula Sankramana' that generally falls in October every year, goddess Cauvery appears in the form of a river. Cauvery is one of the seven major rivers of India Cauvery is the 'Dakshina Ganga' or 'Ganga of the South'.
Irpu Falls:- A mere kms from Nagarahole is the unearthly waterfall "Irpu" on the banks of the pristine river Lakshmanatirtha. The river descends in joyous leaps to anoint the Shiva temple on its banks, patches of eye soothing paddy fields on the surrounding land; it is a wonderful getaway spot. Buses ply from Gonikoppa
Nalknad Palace:- A two storeyed Palace built by King Dodda Veera Rajendra in 1792 at the feet of the highest peak of Kodagu “The Thadiyandamol”. This peak is an irresistible challenge to the trekkers. Paadi Igguthappa temple is a deviation from Kakkabe on the way to this palace. The temple was built by Lingarajendra during 1810.
Nagarhole Wild-Life Century:- Nagarahole, a national park, known as 'Rajiv Gandhi National Park', is one of the most well maintained game sanctuaries in the country. It is centrally located with Madikeri at 98 kms, Mysore at 90 kms and Virajpet at 64 kms. The sanctuary is spread over an area of 647 sq. kms, and is home for herds of Elephants, Gaur, Cheetah, Sambas, Barking deer, Sloth bear, Languor, Jackal, Crocodile, and over a hundred species of birds. Tigers and Leopards, the elusive cats, also have found sanctuary in the park that is rich with Teak, Rosewood, and Sandalwood trees.

Hi,
Following are the main attractions of Coorg.
1. Fort Palace is a jewel in the crown of beatitude, in Coorg. The Fort dates back to the 19th century and was renovated in the British era with tile roof and a clock as well as portico to enhance its appeal. A then European architecture, the Fort Palace is embellished with paintings of old times as well as seal of Royal Family at the entrance.
2. For those who have not been there, RajaÂ’s Seat (Seat of the King) can be conjured as a place located on the horizon. RajaÂ’s Seat is a seasonal garden of flowers and artificial fountains. Admission is free, Timing: 5:30am-7:30 pm.
3. Gandhi Mantapam is located to the left of Raja Seat. It is a memorial to Gandhi Ji—the father of the nation—where his mortal remains are preserved. The Gandhi Mantapam is also the place where Mahatma Gandhi addressed people on his visit to Madikeri.
4. A place of great interest and striking beauty, AbbiFalls have put every heart under its spell. Located 5 km from Madikeri (Madikeri-Galibeedu Road) the Abbi Fall cascades 70 ft deep in the valley. One can reach up to the valley through the steps built up to the Abbi Falls, wending their way to the private Coffee Estate, falling en route the way up to the fall. Opening Time: 6:00-10:00 am, 5:00- 8:00 pm, Aarati: Morning and evening
5. The OmkareshwarTemple in Coorg is located at a certain height of 1,170 ft above the ground level. It was constructed by Lingarajendra II in the 19th Century out of guilt for killing an innocent Brahmin. The temple is an attractive fusion of Indo-Sarcenic and Konkan Coast style of architecture, and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The walls of temple are decorated with intriguing paintings, including Sai Baba and Raghvendra Swamy.
6. Thalacauvery is the most significant pilgrimage centre in Madikeri, drawing attention of many who visit the destination. An originating source of the river Cauvery, Thalacauvery settles its way up in the Bramhgiri hills, flanked and guarded by forests and hills on all sides. Thalacauvery can be accessed by a good network of road; 8 km from Bhagmandala and 46 km from Madikeri.
Regarding the climate winters are also pleasantly cool at 15-20 degrees Celsius. However during December to February, the minimum temperature may dip to 9°C.
Have a Happy Journey!!!!

Hi,
The month of may is just fine as the monsoon would have just set in and is excellent weather all round, the major sight seeing around madikeri is the raja's seat, abbey falls, the peak of tadiyandamol for the trekkers and for the elderly the bhaghamandala, talakaveri, and the omkareshwara temple in the town should be intresting you can also see the golden temple and the monastary at kushalnagar on the way to coorg.
The nearest railway station is mysore which is 120 kms away from madikeri but you have excellent volvo buses connecting pls check with reservations in advance.
Three days may be a sort of hurry burry schedule but its okay if u can extend it by a day or so to enjoy the weather up here.
Accomadation on 3 or 4 star you could try the capital village or coorg international

Thanks!
Dear, Daytime Ooty will be warm with high glare (about three or four hours a day) rest of the day and night will be pleasant. The journey to Ooty will be hot.

Hi,
Further to your query, the best way to travel from Ooty to Coorg is by CAR. you need to stop over at Madhumalai & Bandipur for a Wildlife Safaari on your way. The distance between Ooty & Madikeri (Coorg) is approximately 280Kms and you will have to travel via Mysore which is 130Kms from Ooty to Mysore.
Warm regards,
HEMANTH
Tusker woods
Hey Subu,
Thanks a ton. I am planning to visit Ooty during first week of April, do you think it would be too hot then ???
Hi,
From Ooty, it would be best that you go to Mysore (150km) and proceed to Medikeri, Coorg (85km). Road to Madikeri is fine from Mysore and going might be a little slow on the Ooty Mysore road. The only option you have is to travel by road. You need to plan the season you are going as it can get quite hot, too hot for a 10 month baby.
Thanks!

Hi gunjan,
A pleasant place for all seasons, March makes the most ideal time to visit Coorg. Madikeri can also be seen in its full blossom during monsoon. That’s why this season is called as On Season for visiting Madikeri. Summers are affordable with a max of 25 -30 degrees centigrade and, surprisingly, winters are not-so-cold, as assumed by many people. Although pleasant throughout, but during the rainy season it can be worst with high humidity level.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Thanks!
Subu
Dear nivnam
The road condition from mysore to madikeri is good you don't get hairpinbends, till kushalnagar its state highway.
Thanks!
Navin
Dear Nivman,
Mysore to Madikeri is a decent drive with hardly any hairpin bends. Have a lovely drive. I will advice you to carry some medicines to prevent vomiting sensation.
Thanks!
Subu
Dear Sooraj,
Coorg also boasts of housing one of India finest wildlife sanctuary - Nagarhole National Park. Besides Nagarhole, Dabure is an elephant capturing and training camp, located at the edge of Dubare forest, on the banks of the river Cauvery. If you love elephants, then this is the place for you. Nagarhole is probably the most preferred tourist spot at Coorg and also one of the best tourist destinations of Karnataka state. The sanctuary abounds with rich wildlife resources, which includes both flora & fauna. If you are in Karnataka, be it for a leisure trip or a business trip, just try to give a visit to this wildlife park, a place that will leave you astound.
Best Time to Visit the Park : The best time to visit the national park is from October to April.
Thanks!

Hi,
By road would be the only way. You can take a bus or taxi to Mangalore. Be warned the roads are terrible.
Thanks!
Hi,
By road would be the best choice. You can take a bus or taxi to Medikeri. Its a five hour and half hour drive. There is a late night volvo also - leaves at 11pm and reaches at 5am.
Thanks!
Dear Dipti,
There are no trains all the way to Coorg. You need to take a train to Bangalore, Mysore or Mangalore. And then take the road. A four/five day trip would be relaxing. It gets a little hot after March and the rainy seasons is avoidable. The best time would be October to February.
Thanks!
Subu
Dear Jasmine,
Your friend is right, the afternoons can get quite hot with high glare. This is one of ideal times! Anytime between Oct(end) to Feb(beginning) is technically a good time. Its a not really a hill station say like Ooty. March end will be quite hot in the day. The evenings are generally pleasent.
Thansk!
Subu

1. Hi! There are many places to visit in coorg:- 1.Abbey Falls:- Abbey Falls also called as Abbi Falls is located 1 km from the town of Madikeri. The waterfall is located between coffee plantations with coffee bushes and spice estates.
2.Raja's Seat:-Raja's Seat is a small pavilion with a garden surrounding it; offering a view of the green valley below. According to legend, the kings of Coorg spent their evenings here. The spectacular sunset and the far stretching blue mountains will take ones breath away.
3.Madikeri Fort:- You can find two life size masonry elephants in the north-east corner at the entrance and a church in the south-east corner.
4.Omkareshwara temple:-It is located just 1 km away from the heart of the Madikeri. The temple has both Islamic and Gothic style of architecture. There is a tank in front of the temple.
5.Gaddige-Raja's Tomb:- Gaddige or the tombs of Virarajendra and Lingarajendra at Madikeri is one of the important monuments of Coorg. It is located in the north of Mahadevpet in Madikeri city. The 2008 White Water Rafting Season in Coorg has begun from 1st July. Barapole offers one of the best rafting stretches in South India. Dear Archana,
November to April is the ideal time to visit Coorg. There are no such drastic temperature variations and the climate remains more or less pleasant throughout the year. Since it is a hill station, during the night the temperature falls, hence you are advised to carry the woolen cloths.
Thank!
Dear Aparesh,
You need to take a train to Bangalore or Mysore and then go by road.
Thanks!

Hi Angela,

how to reach coorg from bangalore and staying for 2 days
hi,
You can go either via mysore or take a right after srirangapatna towards ranganetittu brid sanctuary. The second option is nicer route if not halting at mysore. The roads are decent. Some of the home stays are situated in beautiful areas. In any case Madikeri is a nicer place to stay.
Thanks!
Subu
Dear ratheesh,
You can try this - kottayam - malabar - mattanur - irritti - virajpet - apnenatti - siddapura - medikeri.
Thanks!

coming to bangalore will be too far... a better option for you would be to catch a train to mangalore n then catch a bus to coorg... you keep getting busses to coorg... you cant come to coorg by train cause no trains ply in coorg cause its a hilly place... hope you have a great time... if you need more info you could mail me at nikclick_1@yahoo.com... take care...
Dear Manish,
You can take a train to Bangalore, Udyan Express reaches at around 8.30am. Opposite the railway station is the bus stop, you should be able to take a bus to Medikeri, its at 9.30am, but please check the KSRTC site for the exact time.
Thanks!
Subu
Dear Sudhir,
Buses ply from Mangalore to Coorg. Mangalore has lots of budget hotels around the bus stop. You can get in touch with www.kiomoi.com & they will help you in booking your hotel in advance.
Thanks!
Subu
Dear Sir,
This would need quite a bit of planning. I guess you will be staying in Medikeri. It might be a good idea to keep that as a base. You can have a very relaxed holiday since you have 7 days. Couple of days at Nagarehole Wildlife Park. And the rest traveling to places (day trip) like Bylakuppe (the Tibetan settlement), Dubare Elephant Camp, etc.
Thanks!
Subu
Dear Abhijit,
There are lots of buses from Mysore. Are you sure there is a direct train from Pune to Mysore? Because trains to Bangalore don't come via Mysore.
Thanks!
Subu
Ramchand,
Hi Ramchand,
Usually it takes 3 hrs but now it takes more than 4.5 because of very bad roads i think if you can change your idea of flying to Bangalore rather than mangalore its good and rented cars are easily available from both the airports and about the condition of mangalore madikeri road i cant explain how bad it is it should be experienced.
Thanks!
Nirath
Dear Sir,
Well, the roads from mangalore to madikeri are not too good. Taxis or buses should not be a problem. It is over a four hour trip. If you want to hire a cab i will advice you to contact www.indiahotelrwview.com.
Thanks!
Subu
Hi Manish,
It would be too tight a trip. You could spend a day in Mysore and the next day drive to Medikeri early in the morning, on the way you could visit Byalkuppe (the Tibetan settlement) & Dubare Elephant Camp. You will have a couple of hours in Medikeri for siteseeing.
Thanks!
Subu
From mysore to madikeri(coorg) it is 120 km, the route from mysore to madikeri is hunsur-kushalnagar- madikeri. For stay you have option of homestay, hotels. You give all your details to www.kiomoi.com & they will assist you.
Hi Mama,
I suggest you travel to Bangalore from Mumbai and by road it is just 5 hours to Madikeri, Coorg. If you have plans to go Mangalore then also you can go by road which will take 2-3 hours to reach Madikeri depending on the road condition. But the road from Bangalore to Kushalnagar which is just 22kms before Madikeri is excellent and you can just zoom past.
I have a home stay of my relative and you can stay there. This is a beautiful place close to Madikeri and all the sight seeing places are nearby. You can enjoy coorg cuisine and excellent hospitality. If you are interested you may write to me at pnima1@yahoo.co.in.

Hi Paromita,
I am from Coorg and have my relatives home stay there. That would be good bet compared to hotels because you will be living in a bungalow amidst coffee estates and you can enjoy good home food. Let me know if you are interested and contact me on my cell phone 99001 55494, I am based in Bangalore.

Hello,
Thanks for your query in Kiomoi, you could have a busy two days: try and cover - bhagamandala / talakaveri / brahmagiri hills - the first day & dubare elephant camp / bylakuppe (tibetan settlement) on the second.
Have A Nice Day.
Dear Sir,
i guess, you will be staying in medikeri (capital of coorg). and you would visiting for two to three days?
Hai,Actually the name Coorg is of a district. This district is fiiled with tourist destinations. To cover all of them you will take more than 3 days. Landscape of coorg up and down. You need to pass through several ghat roads to travel from one place to another. Major tourist spot is the capital city Madikeri which is a muncipality and an adjustable town. There are numerous resorts in this place. i will give you a 3 day trip plan:Day 1:Abbi falls: This is a place situated at about 7 kms from Madikeri amidst natural beauty. This was formally christened as “Jessie falls” in honour of Chiplin’s first daughter, but later on called as “Abbi falls”. This is situated in the border of a cardamom garden surrounded by green hills and the waterfalls from 20-feet height, which has made the place a beautiful spot and attracts lot of tourists. During the days of Dharmaveera, the Ex. Governor of Karnataka, the steps to go to this place were built in cement.
Auto fare: Rs. 40/- from Madikeri Town and private buses are available.
Palace in the fort:
At present the fort is situated at a top most point built with stones. Tippu after building a stone fort called this as “Jafrabad”. In the year 1790 Veerarajendra took back this fort to his custody. From then onwards it was in the hands of Haleri kings till 1834. Afterwards British captured it. There was a Veerabhadra temple to the south of the fort, which was later on occupied by the British, who converted it into a prayer hall. Lingaraja, who ruled Kodagu (Coorg) after Veerarajendra rebuilt a palace in between the year 1812-1814 with brick and mortar. During British rule, the palace was renovated twice. In 1933, a portico to park the commissioner’s car and a clock tower was also built. At present different offices of the district administration are lodged here.Auto fare: Rs. 10/-
Omkareshwara temple:
In 1820 a significant building built by Lingarajendra was Omkareshwara temple. This has both Islamic and Gothic style of architecture. There is a tank in front of the temple. There is a footpath leading to a small “Mantap”. The surrounding place is abode with peace. There is a story behind building of this temple. It is said Lingarajendra killed an honest and pious Brahmin to fulfill his political ambitions. That Brahmin became a “Brahmarakshasa” and started teasing the king with troubles. It left the king only when the king brought a “Shivalinga” from Kashi and installed it after building a temple. The shivalinga was named as “Omkareshwara” and regular rituals were performed. The bars of the windows of the temple were made of “Panchaloha” and an alphabet “lim” has been placed in between the bars. Four minars have been built on four corners of the temple and the central minar is like a globe, which anybody can see.The Graveyard (Samadhi) of kings: To the north of Mahadevpet in Madikeri city, there is a mount of mud having Samadhi of Kings. There we can see the samadhis of Doddaveerarajendra, his wife and Lingarajendra. His brother Lingarajendra completed the samadhi started by Doddaveerarajendra. Sannaveeraraja built Lingarajendra’s samadhi in the year 1820.
In the year 1834, in addition to king’s samadhis, “samadhis” were built for diwans Teppadikeponnappa and “Rajguru” Rudrappa. We can see samadhis built for army chief Biddanda Bopu, who was the commander-in-chief for the army of Doddaveeraraja and Chikkaveeraraja and his son Somaiaha’s samadhi too. On the samadhi of Biddanda Bopu, there is a plate carved in Kannada praising him for his bravery shown in the wars fought against Tipu Sultan.
All the samadhis of kings are in Islamic style and there is an alphabet “lim” in between two bars of windows.
Auto fare: Rs. 10/-
Raja seat:

Raja seat:
This is a place, where the kings used to spend their evening time enjoying the natural beauty. This is a place, from where you can see the far off green hills and the paddy fields, which are there in valleys. The tar roads look like serpents, which run between the thick forests. It is a very good place from where we can see the snows and clouds moving on the top of green hills. There is no other place from where we can see the wonderful sunset and enjoy the beauty of nature. The Government has many plans to make this place more beautiful.Auto fare: Rs. 10/-
Day-2:
Bhagamandala:
This is a pilgrimage center situated 39 kms to the west of Madikeri. To reach this place there are enough good roads from both Madikeri and Veerarajpet. Both private and government buses ply to carry the commuters. This is a place, where Kannika and Sujyothi, the two tributaries to Cauvery join. This is known as “Triveni Sangama”. Near to this sangama, there are four temples, where Eshwara, Subramanya, Vishnu and Ganapathi are installed.
This is also known as “Bhagundeshwara Kshetra”. The pilgrims before going to Talakaveri take a dip in the sangama and perform “Karmas” (rituals) to their ancestors. (Known as “pindapradhana”). During the Cauvery festival and Tula Sankramana, tourists and pilgrims will assemble here in large numbers. There is a stone “Shasana” carved in Tamil language inside “Bhagundeshwara” temple. In between the year 1785-1790 it seems that Tipu had converted it into a fort and had a company of his army. He had named Bhagamandala as “Afesalabad”. In 1790 King Doddaveeraraja took Bhagamandala back after having a fierce battle for five days. During the time of this battle there was a damage caused breaking three copper plates by the “Firangis” directly handled by Doddaveeraraja, which were later on replaced by four silver plates. The style of the temples built in Malayali style brings the memory of temples in the far off Nepal.
Private and government buses ply frequently.
Talakaveri:
After performing the “Karmas” to the ancestors taking a bath at Bhagamandala, one has to tread about 8 kms towards Brahmagiri hills, where one can land up at the birthplace of river Cauvery known as Talakaveri. This Brahmagiri is situated amidst green hills. There is a parapet wall of 30 by 3 feet to a tank. There is another tank adjacent to this, which is of a square 2 and ½ feet. It is in this tank that Cauvery takes her birth and flows. As per the local puranas, every year on a particular day and at a particular time the river Cauvery springs out and gives “Darshan” to her devotees. This is on 17th October every year. That day is known as “Tula Sankramana”.There are temples at Talakaveri of Agasthyeshwara and Lord Ganapathi. The Brahmagiri hill at the birthplace of Cauvery is about 300-feet height. It is believed that “Saptha Rishis” had gone for a penance here and got “Moksha”. In evidence of this we can see seven “agni kundas” even today.
In earlier times, only young people could have climbed the Brahmagiri hills but now the Madikeri Lion’s Club have put about 435 stone steps and has made it easy for the pilgrims to go on top and have a view of the natural beauty. We can see Kudremukh, Chamundi Hills of Mysore and Vainad hills of Malbar and if there is a good clear weather, we can have a clear view of Nilagiri Hills and Arabian Sea from the peak of Brahmagiri.
Private and government buses ply frequently.
Day-3:
Chettalli:
This is in the Madikeri-Siddapur road about 24 kms from Madikeri. There is a research center and there is a modern research center for agriculture also. They will grow fruits and vegetables in a scientific way. It is spread in an area of about 170 acres. There is a coffee research center also.Iggutappa devara betta:
This is situated near Ayyangeri forest in “padithara valley”. There is a peak, which is a pilgrimage center and a holy place for both Kodavas and Hindus. The deity Subramanya is called as “Iggutappa” by the kodavas. The people of this district will perform special poojas frequently.Irpu:
This is a very important holy place and pilgrimage center situated at 48 kms from Veerarajpet very near to the Kurchi village of South Canara on the banks of Lakshmanthirtha, where a Shiva temple had been constructed, the deity, it is believed was installed by Sriramachandra himself. On Mahashivarathri day people from all over the district will assemble here, after taking a dip in the river Lakshmanthirtha they will offer poojas to Lord Shiva. Around Irpu towards Vainad there is another peak Brahmagiri Shikara, which is known for its natural beauty. There is a guesthouse on the peak from where we can see the panoramic view of nature.
Resturants prefferd:
The veggies only hope is the Udupi Hotel that serves pure vegetarian, or the usual masala dosas at East End Hotel (near Tollgate, Madikeri). East End serves drinks as well. Coorg Hotel (opposite Gen. Cariappa's statue) dishes out authentic Coorg curry and paranthas. Located near the Raja's Seat is Raj Darshan which offers local fare and north Indian food.
Hi! Subu, Can you give distance in time?
Hi..
Thanks for your query in Kiomoi, the roads are ok. the view scenic and not too much traffic. wagon-r will cruise along well.
cheers
Madikeri
The capital of Coorg formerly called Mercara, Madikeri is often known as the Scotland of India. It has enchanted millions of travellers with its misty hills, lush forests, coffee plantations and breath taking views. Also known for its lovely climate, Madikeri is a world record holder for the cardamom crop.
Kakkabe
Famous for being the largest producer of honey in south east Asia, though most come here for the Padi Igutappa temple. This is Coorg’s most important temple and the presiding deity of the Puthari Festival. Built as a hunting lodge, the Nalnad Palace is used as a kiddies’ camp, though no one will really mind you pottering around. You could also visit the honey farms.
Getting There
Bus & Taxi: There are daily buses that do it in about 90 minutes. You could also catch yourself a bus from Napoklu.
Omkareshwara Temple
With a dome in the middle of a square lake and minarets at each corner, this is a catholic mix of Keralite, Gothic and Islamic architectural styles. Built in 1820 by King Lingarajendra.
Cauvery Nisargadhama
A great place to cuddle up for the night. This 2.5 sq. km. large island in the middle of the River Cauvery, is some place to romance.
Bhagamandala & Telecauvery
At the convergence of the rivers Cauvery, the underground Sujyothi and the Kanike, the Bhangandeshwara temple here has a distinct Kerala touch. Because of the three rivers, it is also called Triveni Sangama. The serene temple has intricate carvings and a copper roof. A dip at the Triveni Sangam nearby is supposed to revive sagging spirits, but take prior permission at the temple.
Every October 17, on Tulasankranama, thousands come here to swim and pray. For this is Telecauvery (meaning Head of the Cauvery), the origin of one of the seven sacred rivers. The source of this long river, which passes through two states, is on the top of the hill called Brahmagiri. It is 1535 metres above sea level. Steps lead up to the Brahmagiri peak, from where a panoramic view of Kodagu meets the visitor.
Getting There
Bus & Taxi: Buses leave Madikeri every hour, and take about 90 minutes to reach. The ride is very scenic.
Nagarhole National Park
Though the name literally means Snake River in Kannada, there aren’t too many snakes around. Created from a former raja’s hunting grounds, Nagarahole is one of the best game sanctuaries in South India, providing a natural living conditions to several wild animals like elephants, tigers, panthers, rhinos and wild elephants, but one is more likely to see smaller game like gaur, deer, wild dogs and langur. Pleasantly cool round the year, it is a little difficult to reach, which makes it quieter than other parks. This in turn makes it a great place to relax. Jungle safaris are available as elephant rides.
Getting There
Bus & Taxi: Direct dailies from Mysore and Madikeri. You could also take a bus to Gonikoppal from either of these places, take another to Kutta, and finally hire a jeep.
Irpu Falls
This is more a hike than a holiday (there are people like us out there who take these differences very seriously). You could begin from behind the Rameshwarna temple, and relax at a refreshing pond halfway up the falls. Then, if you are some strange sort of enthusiastic trekker and have some spare RBC (the leeches demand that), carry on to the top.
Getting There
Bus & Taxi: Direct buses leave Madikeri every couple of hours. You could also catch a bus from Gonikoppal. There are more of those from there.
Abbi Falls
Just 7 kilometers from Madikeri town are the Abbi Falls, as remarkable and striking a sight as you would see anywhere. The narrow road to Abbi Falls is a combination of steep ups and downs, twists and turns, wriggling through the green and dense foliage of surrounding coffee plantations. Situated on private property, a narrow pathway leads you downward to where the waterfall can be seen.
As various streams congregate in the mountains above, they swell with the monsoon rains and force their way down the mountain slope. Splashing hard against the huge boulders of rock, unmindful of the crevices and hollows, the water drops at enormous speed accompanied by gushing sounds. This white wall of water creates a misty cloud with its moisture-like spray and descends into a flowing stream to perhaps join with the River Cauvery somewhere in the vicinity.
Somwarpet
If you can get off to an early start and if the sky is beautiful with the clouds, take the road to Somwarpet. This 42-kilometer, one-and-half hour drive will surely perk you up. This is the coffee heartland of Coorg. You will pass through some of the finest coffee estates you will ever see. Magnificent trees reaching up to the skies, casting much wanted masses of shade to the coffee plants. It's one great spread of continuous foliage very gloriously prepared in an extraordinary operation by Nature. Mingled with cardamom and pepper as well. Big, medium or small, they add to the already beautiful and fabulous landscape all around.
Besides being the hub of coffee activity, Somwarpet's other claim to fame is the Basappa Club. Like the cold stone-walls of taverns where sailors and ship mates would gather to make merry, drink, talk and pick up some gossip, the Basappa Club is frequented by the medium and small gentlemen coffee planters, who meet here to unwind. Except that out here, there are no cold, stonewalls. Instead, one can have a game of Table Tennis or Snooker in this small, but compact club. And there’s plenty of gossip to be picked up, as well.
Apart from the popular sight seeing places, Kodagu district has a whole lot of Trekking Tracks for those who seek adventure in the wild.
